trim

 UK  /trɪm/ US  /trɪm/

-mm-

trim verb [T] (CUT)

 1. cut vs. trim

I had my hair cut yesterday. How does it look?(我昨天剪了頭髮,看起來怎麼樣啊?)

I think you should get your hair trimmed. It looks messy.

2. allow vs. approve (vs. permit v.s admit)

The city council has finally approved the budget for next year.

My parents do not approve of our relationship.(我父母親似乎不同意我們的關係。)

+ to do sth.),它與 permit 和 admit 常被混淆。

The train conductor allowed him to smoke, thought it was not permitted.

It is not allowed to use a cellphone during a flight.(╳)

It is not permitted to use a cellphone during a flight.

You are not allowed to use a cellphone during a flight.

You are not permitted to use a cellphone during a flight.

Using a cellphone is not allowed during a flight.

Using a cellphone is not permitted during a flight.

The bartender pointing at my dog said, "it is not allowed here."

No one under eighteen will be admitted to bars, unless accompanied by an adult.

3. see vs. look vs. watch

I saw Tom give Mary a peck on the cheek.(我看到湯姆在瑪莉臉頰上輕吻了一下。)

Don't you see Mark? He is waving to us.(你沒看見馬克嗎?

Look! It's a shooting star! Make a wish!(看啊!

You looked at your watch several times. Are you waiting for something?

Look! I don't care what you say. You can't change my mind.

Did you watch the football match yesterday?(你昨天有看足球比賽嗎?)

Watch and learn.(片語:學著點!)

We had watched that egg for an hour until it hatched.

Could you please help me watch my kids? I want to go to the bathroom.

Watch out! = Look out!(片語:當心啊!)(但後者英美國家較少使用。)

I do not watch TV.(我不看電視的。)

Action to conserve / preserve the environment must be taken immediately if we want to live in harmony with nature.(如果我們想跟自然和平共處,就必須立刻採取保護環境的行動。)

It’s important to conserve natural resources by cutting down on water and electricity waste.(藉由減少水和電的浪費來保護自然資源非常重要。)

To better preserve historic sites, our government should come up with a more comprehensive policy.(要更妥善地保護歷史遺跡,我們政府應該要提出一個更全面的政策。)

You can’t park here. This parking space is reserved for people with disabilities.(你不能在這裡停車。

This restaurant is always full of people, so make sure you reserve a table in advance.

preserve、reserve「野生動物保護區」

Five people were arrested for hunting in the forest preserve / reserve this morning.(今天早上有五個人因為在森林保護區打獵而被逮捕。)

preserve、conserve「蜜餞、果醬」

A: My mom sent me a jar of cherry preserve. Do you wanna come over and try it?(我媽寄了一罐櫻桃醬給我。

B: Sure. I’ll be right there.(當然。

This nonprofit organization is committed to wildlife conservation and habitat preservation.(這家非營利組織致力於野生動物保護和棲息地保護。)

A: Hi, I’d like to make a room reservation for a standard room.(嗨,我想要預訂一個標準房。)

B: When are you arriving?(您什麼時候來呢?)

A: This Friday.(這星期五。)
