[ukulele]:
Ukulele is a musical instrument, a small four-stringed Hawaiian guitar, of Portuguese origin. It is easy to play; music for ukulele is written in a form of tablature showing finger positions on a chart of the fingerboard
[The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain]:
Established in 1985, it was just one kick-off fun for the band to start performing. They believe that all kinds of music are available for reinterpretation, through the playing of ukulele.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is definitely the funkiest ‘orchestra’ I’ve ever heard. The gig is held in a small hall, which is used as folk dance classroom in Camden and definitely not a standard venue for the orchestra thing. The audience have to drag their own chair from the entrance and choose wherever they wanna sit. Beer is an essential and so are the laid-back mood and the Friday night casual-wear.
And then they showed up, along with ukuleles of different sizes. Sit down, smile, and start the first lovely tune. It was unbelievably smooth and nice, especially when one of the female members starts to sing in a low, comfortable voice. And I thought, um, well, the music this band play probably will be like this: a bit serious like all other orchestra performances, but mellow and beautiful.
But I was wrong. From the second song you would realise how funny they are! They improvised, reinterpretated, sometimes made fun of, those famous songs of all genres. Along with the jokes and funny conversation and interaction among the members, the Ukulele Orchestra has brought me a completely different view of how magical a musician can be to make such intelligent variation on the music and the singing. The most amazing things they did is, one of the member started to sing a familiar song like Killing Me Softly, followed by one the other with tunes that we are familiar with. Then, they started to sing all together but each of them sings their own song. So you can here Killing Me Softly, Hotel California, I will Survive, etc at the same time but in a rather homonymous way. Very impressive.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain has toured around the world for years and even to Japan. If they ever tour to Taiwan and tell you what, you gotta go to check them out, definitely.
