Some Hongkies thinks that speaking English is showing how superior they are. I guess we might think western is superior that’s why speaking English is superoir.

However, I don’t think western is superoir at this moment. I can say that because I am in Australia. They are just a normal human like u and me. I think we have that myth or norm because of the American. They always claim that they feel good of what they are, good lifestyle......This character is good as u say what u want to say.

I asked myself that question as well. I think it is alright to speak English to Hongkies here as we should practise our English here. Besides, it is a kind of respect to the others who are mostly western.

For the people in HK, speaking in English I know is a bit silly. However, if it is good for u, why not?

I had an experience that an Hongkies spoke to me in English in HK and actually he could speak in Cantonese. I was not really fine at that time as my English was bad but I had to do so as I was working and supposed to serve him.

All in all, if the others (I mean Hongkies) feel comfortable to speak in English, just do so. The most important thing is not what u do but what u think. If u speak in English is not for showing that u are superior, then, why not?

These part is for those who are not Hongkies.
Recently 5/5/06, I talked with Eudora about this and she did not understand, so let me explain why I am struggling because of it.

In HK, it is just a city. The first language of HKies is Cantonse. There’s not many people from the other countries. We do have foreigners there but normally HKies don’t need to speak in English.

On the other hand, HK belonged to England. Somehow HKies think that English is a symbol of superior. It means u hang around with foreigners and those are usually rich. AH~~~~~~~~~ u see?

Of course, by proportion, not many people would have a chance to go to the foreign countries or they are not willing to go. If u can speak good English then............somehow they feel that u are rich. That’s it.
