I bought an orchid from Whole Food Market. The cashier smiled and attached a ribbon and a card on it as I wished.
I saw a red, big banner with “grand opening” big characters hung in the outside of the restaurant. The door was locked. Peering through the window, I couldn’t see anything except several tables and chairs. It was quite dark, and quiet inside. How could this atmosphere compare to my enthusiastic heart? Time passed by, and a man with a round, greasy face came over and unlocked the door.
“Is there a grand opening party at 5:00pm here?”
“Ah…I don’t know. I’m an employee.” The man shook his head.
“What’s the owner’s name of this restaurant?”
“Lu-Lu.”he said, without hesitation.“Could I sit and wait here?” I asked. He squinted back to the flower, holding the door with one hand, and let me in.The man directly stepped inside. and then disappeared from the counter. It was 3:30 pm.It was still hot and humid, almost making me fall asleep
In the entry, I sat on the bench. The light had not been turned on. A near dying plant, surrounded by a ribbon was located in the hallway.
I murmured,” it is not lucky for grand opening to place a plant like that in front of the door.”
“I come too early.” I considered leaving the flower on the counter and leaving. Holding the orchid in one hand, I tried to call my friend Angela.
At 4:00pm, peering through the glass window, I saw a friend of mine walking by.
“Hey, here.” I said, waving my hand to Ping. I guessed that she must have been looking for the same place.
“It was dark inside.” she said doubtfully, “Angela or her daughter is supposed to be here.” she said, impatiently. Ping point out the old menu posted on the wall.Something is wrong, I bet,” she said.
“I will go outside to look around a while to see if this store is or not.”
I still sat there, like glue, sticking to the bench. It was 4:30 pm.
She came back shortly, and said, “Wrong place, it located on the corner.”
“Ah ha! Why does the grand opening banner hang in here?”
“Angela said it has already been the grand opening for months.” Ping replied.
Since her husband died many years ago, Angela has independently raised her only daughter. It was her daughter’s idea to open a fast food shop, serving pizza and bo ba milk tea where many young people like to gather. Angel had already spent thousands of dollars to renovate the shop from an old Thai restaurant. She painted the small shop in the light green and added a fancy glass door between the restroom and lounge. “It’s O.K. as long as she likes it!” Angela said.
Two tall healthy plants, congratulation gifts from her friends, were located by the door, and several fresh, beautiful flower arrangements placed on the counter. The gorgeously designed menus lay on the tables, but the price lists have not been posted on the wall yet.
“I’ve already bought the menu stands, but I couldn’t find them,” Jennifer said.
“Please bring some plastic spoons and forks here,” Angela called out to someone.
“Let’s take a picture.” I suggested.
“Yes, I want a photograph with my mom.” Jennifer called her mother.
Angela was busy preparing the food in the kitchen. Ping and I helped Jennifer to decorate, putting scented electric candles on each table. Later, Ping went to pick up a couple of guests to bring them to the shop.
I had never seen Angela’s smiling beam like that before. She often had tears in her eyes when she talked about her daughter’s business. Angela was busy but excited. Recently, she had recovered from a back injury, and walked with crutches for a month. At this moment, preparing, concentrating on the grand opening, Angela looked like the sunshine to brighten hers and Jennifer’s life.
