博物館通常有展示、收藏、研究、教育等幾個功能，若再擴大解釋甚至可以成為文化的表徵。但，什麼是「活的博物館」？

十年前t03gz;，﷽﷽﷽﷽﷽﷽﷽﷽﷽﷽，台東聖母醫院面臨經營危機，陸續關閉了最負盛名的產房和手術室，這兩間房間從此淪為堆放雜物的倉庫，時間彷佛定格在「曾經」的那一霎那。2006年，聖母醫院以台東唯一的安寧病房，重新出發。在討論是否繼續經營的過程中，我們也益發感受到過去神職人員所堅持的「愛主、愛人、為窮人服務」的奉獻精神，於是我們提出「活的博物館」概念，期待聖母醫院成為一種持續性、值得人們傳誦的醫療典範！以博物館的概念，收藏著發生在這裡，包括員工、病友、家屬、志工、捐款人，點點滴滴動人的生命見證！於是，產房和手術室變成為「院史館」的預定位置，我們也開始慢慢收集相關的文物與故事。

有人問，醫院成立博物館要做什麼？「病院」最主要的工作不就是要看「病」，應該去蓋病房才對！這是一般人的想法。試想，如果歷史不重要，人們何必學歷史？學校何必教歷史？人們何必去瞭解父母長輩們的陳年往事？何必看重文明？所有的文物館和博物館是否都應該關門？或許，人們只是認為博物館不是醫院要做的事吧。然而，我們不做，誰做呢？記得聖母醫院剛開始要開餐廳、開農莊、作芳療、引進乳房專用磁振造影行動車時，這些毫無前例可循的創新經營，同樣面臨不少質疑。正如那些外籍神職人員決定要來台灣時，反對的聲音恐怕也不少。後來，事實證明我們的決定是對的！如果我們沒有去尋根，現在連聖母醫院大廳地板上的十字架圖案怎麼來的都不知道。

我確信，這些外籍神職人員一點都不在乎有沒有留下記錄，但是台灣人不應該忘記。曾任文建會主委的邱坤良教授，在2010年以專文建議政府應該成立「外籍神職人員文物館」，以表彰外籍神職人員對台灣的貢獻。我們很高興，我們的方向是對的，而且我們先做了。如果要等政府決定要做才開始進行，許多人、許多事恐怕早已灰飛煙滅了。我們以七年的時間慢慢收集資料，以三年的時間逐步規劃，結合了一流的設計團隊「木石研設計」（鄧麗君文物館之設計團隊），在極其有限的條件下，以一年的時間，完成了聖母醫院「院史館」！這是花東地區第一間由醫院所成立的文物館，並以博物館概念加以延伸到網路，不僅維持了舊有的產房與開刀房的陳設，亦保存了半世紀以來與台東地區醫療與衛教相關的歷史文物。這不只是醫院的院史館，也不只是外籍神職人員的小型文物館，這裡同時是有志當好醫師的學生學習醫德、孩子們體驗生命教育的場所，也是營造健康社區的基地。

Taitung St. Mary's Hospital, previously St.Mary's Maternity Hospital, was the first hospital in Taitung to specialize inobstetrics. Today over half the babies in Taitung are delivered here. Thousandsof steady and powerful heartbeats seem to signify that Taitung has moved onfrom a previous lack of medical resources to glimmers of hope.

For the past 50 years, the hospital has had onesimple and sincere aim: trying to convey "true love" by our actions,thereby breaking the boundary of medical services. The designer of Museum ofthe Living deliberately chose old delivery rooms and operating rooms, brimmingfull of historical significance, as the core of the hospital archive. Theintegration of innovative virtual and substantial media with the concept of aheartbeat brings out the power of life which runs throughout thehospital. 

This history of this little hospital, a line oflife, starts from an old prenatal heart monitor and all the accounts of its upsand downs are recorded among the high and low frequency electrocardiograms. Inanother area, a shelf with 100 drawers collects the stories of past deliveries andpatients. Last of all, a previous operating room commemorates Dr. Shih,Shao-wei, a deceased surgeon whose lifetime devotion to St. Mary's and greatlove are still tangible. All of these things will bring joy to the visitors ofthe museum, allowing them to gradually feel the sincere and touching affectionof Taitung St. Mary's Hospital.
