Saint Marry’s Hospital in Taitung sells famous St.-Marry Cake (sister blessing cake). It is often reported in the media. It is also recommended in the network again and again. St.-Marry Cake is made by a group of foreign sisters according to their hometown bakery cuisine for the purpose of raising enough funds for the only hospice in Taitung and for permanent management.
I have tasted St.-Marry Cake and it is really delicious, crisp, refreshingly sweet, and abundant. But to my sentiment, from the person in charge of the orders I know more about the long story of the foreign sisters. In the past people in Taiwan were poor and the sisters raised funds in foreign lands when the hospital was short of money. Nowadays, Taiwanese are getting richer and richer; on the contrary, St.- Marry Hospital is still lacking in money. We can not do anything about it! They always do what other people won’t do and they save people regardless of cost. They have no more good reasons to raise funds from their countrymen. They can do nothing but turn their interest to the way of making money.
In the very beginning, they got warm response and lots of orders. They had to bake about seven or eight kinds of cakes and it was almost beyond their power. Anyway they were sisters of seventy or even eighty years old. Their pressure grew greater according as the orders were becoming more. On the one hand, they had to hurry up. On the other hand, they were afraid their cakes were not good enough. Some of them fell ill for being too busy. They were scared to death. They were forced to cut down the amount and to set a limit to the dates (a funny way of running). One of them is Sister Xiau Yu-ming, winner of 12th Medical Contribution Medal. She is seventy-seven years of age now. She has been in Taiwan for forty-four years. When she got on to the stage, she asked the organizer whether or not the medal could be changed for cash because Taitung St.-Marry hospital was ( is always) much in need of money.
Though they love money, their spirit is impressive and touching. Their contributions to Taiwan have made us (feel) ashamed. Another sister in the hospital Shi yia-pu is also a winner of the Medical Contribution Medal. She went back to America for rest because of eye disease. When the time for her to leave Taiwan came, she said; “ I came to Taiwan to help Taiwanese. Now I am aged; I do not want myself to become the burden of Taiwanese. The best way is to choose to go back where I came from. There I can be well taken care of by my family.”
Alas! They take good care of our countrymen with their lives. Though old, they do not expect us to take care of them. What they do hope is that we can take of our own countrymen all together. For the time being, the sisters are out for church retreat, so I can not see them. I think we can help them think up some good ways of bakery procedure. I do not think it is harder than curing sick people of the doctors.
