這首歌曲的內容原是依著一則發生在美國的真實故事寫出來的．
故事的男主角是一位因經商時在票據上作了手腳而被判服刑三年的男子，在他出獄前夕寫了一封信給在喬治亞州的妻子，詢問她是否還願意接納他．
如果願意的話，請她在他出獄的當天，在他們家門前的那棵老橡樹上綁上一條黃絲帶．
如果他沒有看到黃絲帶的話，他會留在車上，然後安靜地離開．
歌詞中描述著，在帶他返家的巴士上，這位男主角心裡那既期待又怕受傷害的糾結，很動人的部分是，當巴士即將行至家的時候，他甚至不敢睜開眼睛來，於是懇請巴士司機幫他探看結果……
他不敢置信地聽見巴士司機和車上所有的乘客同聲歡呼起來，於是他睜開雙眼，竟然看到老橡樹上綁著上百條的黃絲帶，在風中飄飛著歡迎他的旋律．
這位男主角，他謙卑地認清自己所犯的錯，幸運地獲得他的妻子以無數的黃絲帶代表她的寬恕與接納，這樣雙方面體諒又寬容的愛感動了美國人以及所有知道這故事的人，後來演進成為美國人在家門前的樹上繫上黃絲帶，以歡迎久別平安歸來的親人的儀式．
據說在中東波灣戰爭期間，還有911世貿大樓的慘案歷程中，綁上黃絲帶也是美國人對自已親友平安的期待做法．
