Senior deputies who last faced elections in mainland China some four decades ago have turned their resistance to the ruling Kuomintang (KMT)-initiated retirement program into concrete action by forming a coalition in Taipei yesterday.
Four aging National Assembly (NA) members and three senior mainland-elected lawmakers who founded the “association to Promote the Protection of the Constitution,” yesterday said they will retire “according to the law, but not according to the party’s wishes.”
The KMT has drafted the retirement program to retire 113 senior lawmakers in three stages within two years, with the deadline slated as Dec. 31 this year, but the program has not been supported by the party elders, who have refused to retire.
In order to ensure that some 10 less controversial bills be passed during the last Legislature session which ended Jan 18, the KMT promised to retire 28 senior lawmakers before the new Legislature session convenes on Feb. 26.
However, so far only six deputies have submitted their applications for retirement, showing that the ruling party’s plan may be thwarted.
Some seniors said they refused to retire because they felt they were being cheated by the ruling party. “I did what my party told me to do, but have they (the KMT) paid attention to what I need?” one senior noted.

The Fraudulent Ant
By Mark Twain (馬克 吐溫)

It seems to me that in the matter of intellect the ant is strangely overrated. During many summers I have watched him, when I ought to have been in better business, and I have not yet come across a living ant that seemed to have any more sense than a dead one…I admit his industry, of course; he is the hardest-working creature in the world –when anybody is looking. But his leather-headedness is the point I make against him.
He goes out foraging, he makes a capture, and then what does he do? Go Home? No, he doesn’t know where home is. It may be only three feet away, no matter, he can’t find it. His capture is generally something which can be of no use to himself or anybody else; it is usually seven times bigger than it ought to be; he hunts out the awkwardest place to take hold of it’ he lifts it bodily in the air, and starts-not toward home, but in the opposite direction,…
Just today I saw an ant go through such a performance as this with a dead spider of fully ten times his own weight, which he finally left in the middle of the road to be confiscated by any other fool of an ant that wanted it.
It is strange, beyond comprehension, that so manifest a humbug as the ant has been able to fool so many nations so many ages without being found out.
