Cell Theory
○All living things are made of 1 or more cells
○The cell is the smallest functional unit of life
○All living cells come from pre-existing cells
○how all living orgainisms share a common structure
○how cells which serve similar functions are found in a variety different organisms
○how parent cells pass on information to thier daughter cells
every cell must:
○obtain food, H20, nutrients and minerals
○maintain normal cell functioning
○grow and reproduce
○remove wastes
○cell wall:protects plant cell and hleps maintain the shape
○cell membrane:controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell
○cytoplasm:consists of the organelles suspened in a jelly-like substance
○nucleus:controls all cellular activities, such as movement and cell growth
○nucleolus:contains DNA and RNA
○endoplasmic reticulum:
rough ER has ribosomes attached to it for making proteins
smooth ER is where lipids and carbohydrates are made
○Golgi body:receives materials from the ER... packages, stores and transports materials to the outisde of the cell
○vesicle/vacuole:a temporary storage area for various materials.. in plants it assists in regulating water and is very large
○mitochondrion: where chemical energy in sugar is converted in to ATP the cell can use(cellular respiration) (powerhouse)
○chloroplast:where the sun’s energy is converted into nutrients for the cell (photosynthesis)
○centriole:protein fibres that aid cell division in animal cells by helping to move chromosomes during cell division
○lysosomes:contains enzymes to breakdown food and destroy wron out cell parts(clean-up crew)
○ribosomes:responsible for assembling the proteins
