Do you know anything about Philip Knight? Probably not, right? Don't worry;you are not alone. There are lots of people who don't know much about him─they probably would ignore him if they saw him on the street.
Philip was born in 1938 in America. He has always loved sports─when he was at university, he was on the running team. Just after he left university, he started a company called Blue Ribbon Sports with his running coach, Bob Bowerman. They brought Japanese sneakers to America and sold them there. They weren't very successful at first, so Philip went back to university where he started to teach.
Philip decided to give his company a new name, Nike, and he also wanted a new logo and slogan for it. At university, he met Carolyn Daviddon in 1979and she designed the "Swoosh" that you see on all Nike sneakers.She was paid just US$35 for her design and he didn't even like the design at first!
Nike has slowly grown into one of the biggest and most fashionable brands in the world . They have done this, not just by spending about US$200 million on advertising each year, but also by selling new, trendy and good quality products that customers all around the world are attracted to.
No doubt, Philip Knight has made his company so successful by thinking big and "Just doing it."
