I think Barbara Cooney wrote and illustrated Miss Rumphius as her way of making the world more beautiful. I really enjoyed the blue, purple and rose- colored lupines and the brilliant story in this picture book.

Miss Rumphius’ grandfather told her when she was little, “you must do something to make the world more beautiful.” She then said the same thing to her niece, who was given the same name, Alice, as her aunt, when she was old.

So I asked myself, “what can that ‘something’ be?” 

“Love enemies. “ Rev. Taylor said in her sermon yesterday. However, it is too hard for me. Sometimes I don’t even respond to the people that love me. I told myself, “at least, I should learn how to respond to the people that love me.” It is also the way to respond to Jesus, who loves me.
