ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Alex Rodriguez sat in the dugout and spoke bluntly. About the revelation that prompted an embarrassing news conference during spring training. About the hip surgery that threatened to end his season before it began. About his recent postseason disappointments.
Twins beat KC, set up 1-game playoff with Detroit
Then he went out and had a record-setting day that had his manager and teammates shaking their heads. "Incredible," Mark Teixeira said.
Rodriguez set an American League record with seven RBIs in a 10-run sixth inning yesterday, propelling the Yankees to a 10-2 win over the Rays in their regular-season finale.
His three-run homer to left-center erased a 2-0 deficit and - after Teixeira was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs - his grand slam to right-center ended the scoring.
It was A-Rod's 18th grand slam and 583rd career homer, tying him with Mark McGwire for eighth on the all-time list, and it allowed him to reach two benchmark numbers - 30 home runs and 100 RBIs - for the 12th straight season. It was the 13th season in the last 14 in which he's reached the 30-100 mark, a major-league record. It also gave the Yankees a franchise-record 244 home runs, two more than they hit in 2004.
"That's a high-water mark for any hitter whether he plays 162 or whatever it is," said Teixeira, who led the American League in RBIs with 122 and tied the Rays' Carlos Peña for the league lead in home runs with 39. "For Alex to get that in I don't know how many games it was , the month or whatever he missed, that's incredible."
It was a season Rodriguez certainly didn't envision during a spring training that started under the cloud created by the disclosure that he had used performance-enhancing drugs and ended with him missing the first five weeks of the season as he recovered from hip surgery.
"I think it's fair to say I hit rock bottom this spring," he said before the game. "Between the embarrassment of the press conference and my career being threatened with my hip injury, and the unknown of not knowing whether I could bounce back, I think my life and my career was at a crossroad, and I was either going to stay at the bottom or I was going to bounce back."
He bounced back in his first game May 8, hitting a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw. The Yankees were a major league-best 90-44 after his return. "That's the type of player he is," Joe Girardi said. "We've talked about Alex, his ability to change games. His first swing of the year was a three-run homer and his last swing of the regular season was a grand slam. He's had a huge impact on our club."
An impact that in recent years hasn't extended into the postseason, a smudge on his resume that he didn't run from yesterday.
"Here's the deal - I hit cleanup for a reason," he said before the game. "My team expects a lot out of me. We all understand [it takes] 25 men to win a championship, you need every guy. And when you lose, people look around and numbers get dissected. And I understand the score and that's the way it is. That's the way it should be."
It was suggested to Rodriguez that yesterday's game, one in which he carried the day at the plate and A.J. Burnett picked up his 100th career win, might portend better things this postseason than he's experienced in the past. "It was a great game," he said. "I loved the way A.J. threw the ball, I liked the way we swung the bats, so, sure, hopefully it is a springboard."
