除了低音貝斯演奏家出版的個人專輯，很少有歌曲是以貝斯做為主奏樂器。但警察合唱團的 Every breath you take 這首歌就是以貝斯支撐起整首歌曲，而且大受歡迎，在一九八三年的告示牌排行榜上，它曾經蟬連八週冠軍，並成為年終排行的總冠軍。
這首歌的作者，是警察合唱團的靈魂人物 Sting史汀，也是該團的貝斯手。他表示，這首歌的寫作靈感源自於當時美國雷根政府為了對抗蘇聯共產政權所提出的星戰計畫，這個擴充軍備的計畫一旦通過實施，大氣層將充斥著各式間諜衛星與殺手衛星，以監控世界各國地表上的軍事活動，即使是一般老百姓的活動亦將是無所遁形。在那個時候，他個人的婚姻生活也出了一點問題，因而寫下了這首歌。
這首歌推出後風行全球，影響了世界各國流行音樂的創作方向，國內當時的玉女歌手楊林就有一首歌，明顯的受到 Every breath you take 這首歌曲的「啟發」。９０年代的西洋樂壇，饒舌音樂逐漸成為主流，Puff Daddy 吹牛老爹也曾在一九九七年改編這首歌，成為另一首暢銷單曲” I’ll be missing you ”，證明好歌果然不會寂寞。
