Hu shines at second base

SAN DIEGO - Dodgers shortstop Chin-lung Hu drew his first career start at second base on Sunday, a byproduct of manager Joe Torre’s desire to give veteran Jeff Kent a full 48 hours’ rest between Saturday’s afternoon game and tonight’s series opener at Arizona.
The result for Hu was not only a game-winning RBI single off Trevor Hoffman in the top of the ninth inning, but also an un-rookie-like defensive play in the third inning that might have saved the game.
With Brian Giles on second and one out, Padres second baseman Tadahito Iguchi hit a hard ground ball up the middle, to an area behind the bag the aging Kent never could have gotten to. But Hu, 24, made a diving stop on the grass in shallow center. After gathering it in, he immediately looked at third, where Giles had rounded the bag by about 12 feet before suddenly hitting the brakes.
Without hesitating, Hu fired a strike to third baseman Blake DeWitt. Giles never had a chance to get back and was out.
Adrian Gonzalez followed with a game-tying, RBI double - a hit that would have scored two runs had Giles still been on base.
”I was just trying to knock the ball down and not let it go to the outfield,” Hu said. ”When I caught it, I knew I had no chance (at) first base. I looked at third base, and he had gone way too far, so I just tried to go that way.”
Peavy denies rumors: Padres right-hander Jake Peavy denied using any foreign substance during his complete-game

domination of the Dodgers on Saturday. A photo taken off the television broadcast by a fan, which showed a couple of dark spots on Peavy’s pitching hand as he reached out for a postgame handshake with a teammate, began making the Internet rounds immediately after that game.
”I have zero problem with anyone checking me out anytime during a game to see if I’m doing anything wrong,” Peavy said. ”I do pick up a lot of rosin, and I pick up a lot of dirt. I pick up dirt every inning. It’s perfectly legal as far as I know.”
Torre said he doesn’t plan to make an issue of the matter.
Young feeling better: Dodgers outfielder Delwyn Young said he felt pain similar to that of a black eye some 24 hours after being hit by a line drive during batting practice.
Young had been standing on a mound in the visiting bullpen before Saturday’s game, engaged in a conversation, when a ball hit by Dodgers catcher Russell Martin caught him just above the right eye.
”I saw (the ball) and kind of turned,” Young said. ”The next thing I knew, I went down. I pretty much figured out what had happened. I didn’t think I had been shot or anything.”
Young wasn’t taken for a CAT scan until he became ill during the game. The test came back negative for a concussion, but Torre didn’t use Young in Sunday’s game as a precaution.
