To sum up, urban design is a slogan as well as a public activity. Social freedom and democracy have guided Taiwan towards being an international country. Likewise, Taiwan has been affected by globalization; urban development has followed the industrial transformation and become a powerful issue. Government and citizens have both to consider how to improve the quality of life in a time of speedy growth and city distension. New urbanism and the sustainable city are probably desirable ideas to develop high density countries especially in Asia. New urbanism views suitable community surroundings as providing for people’s living activities, and catering “pedestrian” use, because that is the most common action. Moreover, the sustainable city emphasizes balance, and not only aims at ecological sustainability but also values economic growth. We have to confront some challenges; city extending and monitoring are tough to deal with, urban design still influences city models and people’s living styles. Many theories and principles fit western countries, but are not really suitable for use in my country, Taiwan. This results from the different extent of land and the diverse cultural background. Therefore, government has to amend certain points to suit Taiwan.
