Why do Americans give gifts at Christmes?


At Christmastime, shooppers pack stores and malls .



They spend hous-and lots of money-selecting just the right

gifts for family and friends.



The average American spends over US$900 on gifts each

Christmas.



That’s a lot of money!



So why do people give gifts at Christmas?

What was the inspiration for this tradition?





The custom of giving gifts at Christmas can be traced

back to the birth of Jesus Christ.




At the time of his birth, three wise men from the East

came looking for Jesus and honored him with gifts.




In America, gift giving at Christmastime began in the 17th

century when early Dutch settlers intoduced St.Nicholas to

the New World.




St.Nicholas was a bishop who lived in the 4th century A.D.

and was known for his kindness to children.




In addition, the English and French eventually changed their

gift-giving tradition from the New Year’s Day to Christmas Day

And soon gift giving became a tradition on Christmast for

most cultures in America. As time passed, St.Nicholas became

known by his American name, ”Santa Claus.”
