Polacco--in the role of young narrator--introduces another cast of characters from her fondly remembered childhood. Brothers Stewart and Winston often invite the girl to join them and their Gramma Eula Mae--whose choir singing is "like slow thunder and sweet rain"--at the Baptist church and to come for Miss Eula's bountiful chicken dinner. When the children hear Miss Eula longing for the fancy Easter bonnet in Mr. Kodinsky's hat shop, they plot to raise the money to buy it for her. Sharing her own family tradition, the narrator teaches the boys how to decorate Russian "pysanky" eggs, that both turn a profit and touch the heart of the crotchety immigrant hatmaker. Without being heavy-handed, Polacco's text conveys a tremendous pride of heritage as it brims with rich images from her characters' African American and Russian Jewish cultures. Her vibrant pencil-and-wash illustrations glow--actual family photographs have been worked into several spreads. Other telling details--Russian icons, flowing choir robes, Mr. Kodinsky's concentration camp tattoo--further embellish this moving story--a tribute to the strength of all family bonds. Ages 4-8.

Chicken Sunday is another one of my favorite Polacco books. This is a fabulous and emotionally touching story of an interracial friendship and the children's journey of love and service. Young Patricia (who has written another great episode about her rich and colorful life) and her two best friends Stewart and Winston (who happen to be black) want to buy the boy's gramma (Eula Mae) a hat that she has wanted but could not afford to buy. Since the death of her beloved babushka, Eula Mae also serves as Patricia's surrogate grandmother. The children witness an act of racism on the hat shop owned by the Holocaust survivor Mr. Kodinski. They were going to ask Kodinski for a job to raise the money to buy Eula Mae her favorite hat. Mr. Kodinski sees the children and assumes that they are responsible for the act of violence. Ultimately, the children redeem themselves by making Pysanky eggs for Mr. Kodinski to sell in his store. He tells them the story of his life and then gives the trio the hat. Naturally Eula Mae is thrilled.
Chicken Sunday is named after the chicken dinner that Eula Mae feed the children every Sunday after Church. This is another multi-cultural book teaching children that it is okay to have friendships with people who are different. Incidentally, Patricia remains close to these boys to this very day. It also exposes children to different types of racism. This book has a wonderful lesson for children and adults.

在這本書中,我們看見亞瑟的怒氣中,其實摻雜許多其他的情緒;寂寞、害怕、傷心、失落、徬徨等。就像現實中的小孩,被包圍在複雜的情緒中,常常也不知如何說明。橫眉豎目的外表下,原來有看不見的脆弱和受傷。
在書中,著者與繪者,藉由精確的圖像表現、文字簡約冷靜、圖畫充分運用線條、色彩、明暗、佈局、造局。在每一處的情節、造型最恰當的象徵、氣氛和情境,引發相應的情勢感覺。
在書中,母親被放大,尖銳的白色線條密佈成網狀的星星,穿太空衣打毛線的奶奶、亞瑟緊抓樹枝、墜落....等等,使讀者在不知不覺中,感受故事的力量、幽默和涵意。 這本書或許能幫助小孩學習不被自己的「氣」吹倒、淹沒,也順便幫助一些常擔憂小孩生氣的「大人」,多了解一點關於「小孩」和「情緒」的真相。 全書運用精確的文圖合作和圖像表現,它的文字簡約冷靜,為故事穿針引線,再以圖畫充分運用線條、色彩及明暗等元素,引發讀者產生相應的情緒感覺,本書利用罕見手法,為小孩描繪「生氣」這個難以捉摸和言喻的情緒,帶著大小讀者一起用顯微鏡把「生氣」這件事看個仔細。在閱讀時屢屢為書中創意驚嘆,本書可以算是一本述說情緒主題的童書佳作。(王嘉龍) 榮獲1983年鵝媽媽獎
透過亞瑟生氣的情形,了解到孩子的脾氣是多麼的具有爆發力及破壞力,大人絕不可輕忽,也許在情緒發洩過後,反而能給孩子一個反省的思維。
*《生氣湯》 作者: 貝西.艾芙瑞(Betsy Everitt)文.圖 ; 柯倩華譯
有一天霍斯在學校遇到一連串不如意的事,像做不出題目,收到「情書」被同學笑,被表演的牛踩了一腳,甚至坐上了珍珠阿姨橫衝直撞的車子。霍斯氣極了想打人,用力踩一朵花,發出怪叫,趴在地上(多麼孩子氣的動作!)媽媽可是完全了解霍斯的感受,並溫和地建議母子二人來煮一鍋湯吧!
媽媽燒了一鍋水,撒把鹽,待水開時說服霍斯對鍋子尖叫、大吼、齜牙咧嘴,吐舌頭,敲鍋子,最後還噴出一大口火龍氣。霍斯終於笑了,媽媽也笑了,母子合力完成了一鍋奇妙的《生氣湯》。
本書封面設計亮麗,鮮豔悅目的色彩、鋸齒狀的線條和散發的熱氣既暗示了故事內容,也吸引了讀者的注目;書名《生氣湯》也令人好奇(不知譯作《消氣湯》是否更恰當?)幽默、誇張、裝飾性漫畫風格的圖畫,和簡單幽默的文字配搭適切,相信讀者們會同情霍斯,喜歡上這位善解人意的好媽媽,而《生氣湯》的烹飪方法說不定會被很多人採用了!難能可貴的是作者兼畫者把一篇不如意的經歷轉化為一則發人深省的故事。此書應該和《Stone Soup》及《Nail Soup》一般受到歡迎。

莫名的怒火上升,溫度不斷加熱,熊熊大火彷若要吞蝕掉週遭的一切事物。小時候總是容易亂發脾氣,一點小事情總是讓人無法忍耐。胸口總有個惡魔藏在那裡似的,讓人全身都不舒服,就是把別人生吞下去也有的勇氣。負面的情緒像是座即將爆發的火山,隨時都可用憤怒與不滿的熔漿給噴出。生氣、不安、沮喪、難過、趨於平緩、平靜。原來生氣是有這麼多不同的錯綜複雜的情緒存在著。
大人們總是容易壓抑小朋友的情緒,容易忽視小朋友的負面情緒原因,總教我們要有好脾氣,然而不是每個不滿都是沒有原因的。如何適當的處理生氣的情緒,與不要一直陷入焦灼的不安與氣氛中,也是我們該正視的。透過菲菲生氣裡的戲劇化與火紅色的高度的憤怒,讓每個小朋友都知道這樣不快樂與情緒化,是每個人都會必須面臨到的。但是別再害怕,每個人都會有開心和不開心的樣子,雖然貌似可怕,但是卻是可以逐漸改善你不滿的壓力與情緒。雖然大家都無法去完全的掌控自我的過度情緒化,但是可以去了解它、看待它。至少當我們不快樂和極度不滿的時候,可以不要再完全掉入這樣的流沙裡,爬都爬不起來了。
*潔西卡和大野狼 Jessica and the Wolf
在親職教育常流於深度不足的台灣社會裡,很多時候,很多現象,我們確實是太習慣簡化、直接的歸因,而很少整體的考量。當孩子無法感受到自己的力量,他甚至不相信自己可以逐漸變成自己想要的樣子,就會有許多的不安。我們常常以為不安是一種外在的因素,所以我們試著收驚、找原因、看孩子在害怕甚麼,卻忘了不安也是一種內在的狀況,是孩子對世界感受和觀點。有時候,不安,也是生命成長過程的一種狀態啊,是不甘於生命現狀、欲求改變的動力。年少的青春裡,我們不都有過這種蠢蠢欲動的不安嗎?
這是一本幫助孩子學習處理惡夢的工具書;當然,透過這樣的故事,我們也有機會讓孩子看到人們可以如何發展及運用自己內在的資源,處理自己的困擾、想像和害怕。這時候,孩子才可以了解人人都有害怕、做惡夢的時候,這都是生活的一部分,重要的是,我們可以學會如何處理,而成為自己的主人。
當然,如果孩子的惡夢仍持續的困擾他,甚至影響他的生活,就需要不忌諱的求助兒童精神科醫師。別忘了,這也是幫助孩子學習運用資源的很好示範喔!我們希望孩子可以保有「事情是可以改變」的積極樂觀態度,正視自己的不安。 真希望人人都有機會學習正視自己心中的那隻大野狼,那隻會不斷追趕自己的神祕大野狼!
*Sam’s Worries by Maryann Macdonald/Judith Riches
Sam has a great many worries. He thinks there may be a volcano under the house, cobras in the garage, he may lose his library books, and he doesn't like the idea of vampires and monsters at all. He is also feeling guilty because he steals biscuits from the tin. When he can't sleep, mum comes along and is sensibly reassuring (except about the biscuits because he hasn't told her about those). Sam and his Teddy are still worried though, because 'Mother's don't know everything'. They make a pact: Teddy will do all the worrying at night while Sam sleeps, and Sam can take on the daytime worrying while Teddy sleeps. It works a treat. The fact that Sam doesn't worry during the day doesn't bother Teddy's sleep at all. Imaginative and beautifully illustrated. A unique answer to a common problem.
Sam有許多的擔憂。他常想著一些有的沒有的事情:像是也許房子下有火山,車庫裡有眼鏡蛇,他可能會丟掉他的書,並且他完全不喜歡有關吸血鬼和怪物的事情。當他不能夠睡覺時,媽媽只是安慰他,並告訴他,那一切Sam所擔心害怕的,都不是真的。但是媽媽的安慰都無助於Sam害怕的心理,於是泰迪態和他開始研究。泰迪熊說:我相信這一切都是真的,不然這樣子的故事怎麼一直流傳下來呢?所以,現在我們要做的,就是好好想出辦法來對付這些妖魔鬼怪。
這時候Sam從棉被下鑽了出來,準備和泰迪態商量;他們研究的結果是-來輪班吧。因為他們相信,只要有人是張開眼睛的,這些妖啊,魔啊,怪啊的,就不敢出現。
於是,泰迪熊值起了夜班,Sam就安安心心地一覺到天亮。公雞叫,天亮了,換Sam起來值班了,小男孩替泰迪熊蓋好了被後,突然想起:白天,那些怪物都不會出現的……
