Patience is necessary not only because different cultures have different rhythms but also because it takes time to ”learn the ropes”
6, Cultural empathy
Focused listening and a non-judgemental approach help managers to understand the other person’s viewpoint. But one’s capacity for empathy is deeply rooted in one’s character and may not be a skill easily acquired.
7, Strong sense of self (ego strength)
That allows interaction with anther person or culture without fear of losing one’s own identity. This also enable the manager to be self-critical and open to feedback.
Creating the ”stability zone”-hobbies, diaries, favorite passtimes, meditation, or religious worship-can provide refuge into which the manager can temporarily withdraw and get refuged. Taking time-out is vital because it reintroduces the element of choice and control over the rhythm of involvement with the new culture and enables the manager to regain a sense of perspective.
9, Sense of humor
Humor is actually important on 2 levels: as a coping mechanism and for relationship building. Humor can be a solution to buffer the frustration, uncertainty, and confusion they are bound to encounter in an unfamiliar enviroment.
