China issued emergency orders to control the meningococcal meningitis outbreak, which has killed at least 16 people since December 20 and has sickened a total of 258 Chinese. Although the Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection insisted that the chance of China’s meningitis outbreak spreading to Hong Kong and Macau is slim but sporadic cases might occur as they did every year.
Meningococcal meningitis is spread by saliva or mucus through sharing things such as drinks, eating utensils and cigarettes. The symptoms are high fever, headaches, stiff neck, vomiting and a spotty rash.
After the lesson of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), we must always ahead of an outbreak of any influenza virus, especially meningococcal meningitis which will lead to death or serious harm to our bodies. We should not cry after spilt milk and have to pay attention to our surroundings and keep our houses, schools and public places clean. We should wash our hands frequently and avoid crowded place, wear face masks and use disinfectant. Anyone who has the symptoms of meningococcal meningitis after traveling from China or nearby countries should be hospitalized. The Health Centres of Hong Kong and Macau should be well prepared and hygiene education should be given to every citizen.
