Hi, Frank,
From the message you left, I think you are a very unique person because you have such a wide range of interests, including languages, literature, business and science. Wow, that’s quite amazing! Actually, I have not the least idea of what ALMA and LHC are. Not until I googled them did I realize that they are on the cutting edge of hi-tech. Very cool and incredible! Since I only focus on the part of Spanish learning, I haven’t browsed your other articles by different categories yet. Usually, I have a tight schedule, so I may not have time to read them. But I firmly believe your articles must be very welcome by other readers.
So, what kind of product do you sell? Hi-tech products? Are you engaged in international trade? Well, if you think those questions are too personal, just ignore them! And last but not least, I would like to thank you for the advice you offer.
Have a nice day!

Hi, Frank,
Thanks for taking so much time to answer my question. It’s really kind of you. According to your response, I guess you may be a professor/teacher because you use some linguistic terms and you sound very professional. I think it’s good for me to know something about this field. I like English very much, so I have been trying to upgrade my ability. As for Spanish, I just learnt it about three months ago. The reason why I learn it is because of an English joke including two or three Spansih words, which are the key to get a good laugh. I posted the question and instantly got two answers from American Chinese, which gave me a big surprise. Later, I started thinking of the possibility of learning Spanish by myself. So that’s why your Spanish Notes are very appealing to me! Whenever teacher Paralee explains in Spanish, it gives me a headache—I don’t understand at all! Therefore, I do need someone to tell me what she says in Spanish. Would you please just try your best to help me? Any your idea or suggestion about English or Spanish learning will be highly appreciated.
Buenas noches!

I like to learn language and pay attn to it. I used to take many courses as well, after graduated from college, I used to take Japanese, Italian and French (in different time). Italian was the one I intended to have learnt back in college, but the one I studied did not have such a course, therefore I turned to Spanish. I was biz-majored, and a salesperson, no teacher or the sort. If you read more, you will learn more.
In these 2 years, LHC, ALMA highlighted on news, which just reminded me of my interests in science. After being a bystander to science for more than a quarter century, I decided to pick it up again on the day that ALMA inaugurated. So, lately I have been reading quantum mechanics & chemistry, & before that it was drama, Shakespeare's & Aristophanes' to be exact, I studied. You may find I put Lysistrata's Chinese transcript here but have not yet finished the proof-read and annotation. The transcript was taken from Chinese website in simplified Chinese characters, then converted and modified names of personas into ones familiar to Taiwanese people. It's irresponsible to put unfinished works here, but after told the story of Lysistrata in some New Year gatherings, friends asked me to find them something to read. So I was compelled to produce one hastily.
As to learning Spanish, I have no idea, either. But you just started to learn it. I believe you should have some textbook, then just stick to it. For sure, it's hard to but it's something you must do. Well, learning English is easy in Taiwan. There are more than 30 channels running English programs or movies, internet...etc. My advice is to read more, read whatever interests you, novel, drama, news, movies, people, celebrities, ...even porn.

BTY, how many years have you learned Spanish? And how long does it take you to view all of the video courses (Level1 to Level 6) offered by SpanishDict? I just finished the Level-1 course, but I feel very discouraged because while I am learning something new, I keep forgetting something old. Alas!
Little did I expect that you posted another message! I will read it when I am available later.

Hi, Frank,
I think I might know what’s going on with the “setting or logging” problem, which confused both of us very much. In fact, there are two versions of message board on your webpage. One is placed at the end of each article you have posted—“我要回應”, which readers can choose “visible” or “invisible” and if they don’t log in, they can’t see the message ; the other is simply for “message board(留言板), which browsers can leave messages even without logging in, but no matter they log in or not, they still can’t see the message because the only setting mode is “invisible.” Well, how do I perceive it? Yesterday I saw you had posted 2.1, so I read the transcript very carefully and I did spot some typos. When I scrolled down the page and intended to inform you, I found the format of the message board is different from that of the one I used for the past few days. However, it seems that you switch the settings for the two versions today. Just go see for yourself.
The following are the typos I found.
1. Paragraph 1
Should the last two words be “profesiónes preguntas” instead of “professions guntas”?
2. Paragraph 2
Line 1 The word “significa” is misspelt as “sifnifica.”
The word “ingles” needs a tilde on the top of the letter “e.”
Line 2 The Spanish word “profesiónes” is misspelt as “professions.”
3. Paragraph 3
The word “profesiónes” is misspelt again.
4. (Skip to the middle part of the script)
Right before the example sentences: Antonio es mecánico.
“In statement, the subject precedes the verb, like Nomamente”
What is “Nomamente”?
5. In the 2nd line from the bottom of the 3rd paragraph
“recepcionista” is misspelt as “recepcionsita”
6. The last paragraph
Line 2 “veterinaria” is misspelt as “veterinaira”
Considering that you have typed so numerous words, I have to say “Well done, Frank!” Let me give you a thumbs-up!

it's strange to leave message on my own blog, but I easily replied more than it allows, even after reconsidering wording & trim some words, I could only reply as previous message. So, it just came to me to leave a message here for you.
6. sound of ke or ge.
How do you pronounce sky, skill, scale, school in English? Try to ponder on this, then you might no longer consider it as a problem. If it still is, then you will have this problem with both English and Spanish. If you visited some Spanish forum on internet, you would find in many posts, que was made as q or k (few).
7. T, D
It's not easy to tell. The advice I can give is to pronounce Spanish T as something between English D & T, and pronounce Spanish D as th in English thank, think.
8. language
I have no idea how many languages you speak or learnt. Allow me to remind you something about the nature of language or its speakers.
Peoples use alphabet system to write their language mostly have never learnt phonetics. But as a foreigner, you learnt phonetics to know the language. The official language of Taiwan and China are Mandarin. Except different accent, Taiwanese Mandarin is different from Chinese Mandarin. Personally, I think different phonetic system is contributory responsible. When lived in China, I spent much time listening to TV for learning Chinese Mandarin. One phenomenon I noticed was that a great deal of people pronounced the word to their phonetic system making it different than Taiwanese Mandarin. For example, "who are you?" Many speak exactly like Taiwan's, but a great deal of Chinese pronounce exactly as it spells, "ni shi shui". Very likely half a century later, shui might be the "correct" and widely spoken; not the one Taiwanese Mandarin speakers pronounce, "shei". Just logon Baidu, then key in "ni shi shui" and "ni shi shei", to see what Baidu cues you if you speak any kind of "Chinese".

Oral language and phonetics influence each other. What is correct today may very likely obsolete in the future. As peoples use alphabet system to write their languages mostly do not care so much about phonetics, that's why you cannot read English & French like you read Spanish. Though English and French adopted Latin alphabets to spell out their languages in the very beginning, after hundreds of years, one needs another phonetic system to read out these 2 languages.
Besides, language is about oral expression, so it contains certain musical nature. Chinese language sacrifices this trait to articulation. This might explain why Confucious preferred percussion music to orchestral one. It's very difficult to understand Chinese lyrics of a song unless you know it beforehand. Because each Chinese word is precisely articulated. After listening to a Chinese song, and try to use the phonetic system to spell the lyrics out, then you will find the lyrics turns out to be very different than what they are supposed to be. Such difference is much smaller in the language which is written in alphabet system in the first place.

Hi, Frank,
I couldn’t help clicking your website again, and, to my great delight, I saw the messages! Hurraaaaah!
Thanks for sharing me your viewpoint about the pronunciation as well as how you overcame the trill! I can fully understand your joyfulness when you finally got the knack of it. I think I am much luckier than you when it comes to "alveolar trill". Just as you did, I also practiced pronouncing it whenever I was available and wherever I went—I must have been nuts at that time because such an act incurred people’s strange glances at me. However, by trial and error for a couple of months, I made it.
On the other hand, your opinion on “The Pronunciation of B/P & D/T” is a bit different from my anticipation. Since I’m just a beginner, I think it is very important to learn how to pronounce words correctly. Let me give you some examples, then you may understand what bothers me. When teacher Paralee said the word “que”, what I heard sometimes was [ge], but sometimes was [ke]. So is the word “tenis”—is it pronounced “Te-nis” or “De-nis”? I heard both! And how about “patinaje”—do you say “Pa-tinaje” or “Ba-tinaje”? One more example, “americano”—is it read as “ame-Li-cano” or “amer-Ri-cano”?
By the way, you are indeed a good Samaritan. I know, it is pretty time-consuming to write out all of the video transcripts first, then typing and finally trying to post them online. It needs a lot of determination and persistence to get them done. Thank$ a million for sharing them with net pals so generously—without any reservation! Well, now I guess I will visit your website as often as I can. Tenga un buen día!
ps. Since your message board will surely set it invisible, please just make it visible. I don’t want to waste time looking for where I can retrieve it. Muchas gracias.

1. setting of this message board
I might just accidentally set it invisible. It seemed a "added on" function, then I was asked to set my preference someday; it was annoying to me, I just chose whatever.
2. The Pronunciation of B/P
There was a typo, it should be "B/V" rather than "B/P". The famous "b de burro, v de vaca", I can hardly tell the difference. Apparently many Spanish have difficulty telling, too. Otherwise, there wouldn't be such an expression. Besides, it's not easy to tell the difference between b/p to me. The "problem" here is Spanish pronounce their consonants very softly. To solve this kind of problem, I think you either live in Spanish-speaking country for certain period of time or build up larger vocabulary.
3. r & l in a word
Paralee's pronunciation is, to great extent, Americanized (US), I feel. You can find plenty of explanation on this on internet.
4. Spanish learning
You mentioned if you can consult me with "learning problem", therefore I tried to give you solution. When I first read you mentioned "learning problem", I thought you asked the wrong person. "El problema es masculino, la solución es femenina.¨ my teacher mentioned several times in the class. Well, of course, it was a she-teacher said that with a satisfactory smile. Then I read your message of "problem", son preguntas, no es problema. But I reply as they were problems.
The time I learnt Spanish there was internet on campus only, HiNet was not yet born. It was not as convenient for learning a foreign language. I'm not qualified to answer you questions though I started to study Spanish much earlier. I believe you can easily google to find the answer to your questions.
5. SpanishDict Lesson
L2.1 published without proofread, there might be typos; if you find any, pls jot it/them down and let me know. I will correct them accordingly. L2.2 will be published in these few days, most likely without proofread, too. But even I did the proofread, it's still E.&O.E.

Hi, Frank,
Maybe this is my last time to visit your website because even I login your blog, I still can’t see your message, which is really frustrating. Yahoo is the website I frequent most of the time, so I am not familiar with how the PChome system works at all. It sometimes seems very user-friendly, but sometimes not. And I don’t want to be misunderstood by you about how I got into your blog and left the previous messages. If you don’t believe me, you can be a guest and leave any word in your message board, then you will understand the situation I ran into. Well, thanks anyway. Adiós.

The intention of posting those transcripts is being a good Samaritan. If anyone could benefit from it, then that's good. If not, it would just be another electronic junk message on internet.
Regarding login or not, it's a logic problem nothing to do with me. Yahoo's blog does not even allow anyone to leave any message without login, which made me think PChome friendly. Privacy is usually granted with consideration.
2. The pronunciation of B /P & D/T.
This is even more difficult. I do not know your background, but if you grew up in Taiwan, then you would be pursuing "standard" pronunciation. In reality, there is no standard pronunciation of any kind of language, but "popular" ones. If you watch some old movies, Chinese or English alike, you would find that only few people nowadays speak in that way nor pronounce the words as they did mostly. Some might think it's the same in Mandarin, but they are not actually; no matter in Taipei or Beijing, people speak the same language but use wording & pronounce differently than 50yr ago. To some, that is nuance and should be ignored. But if you were a linguist and understood the language phonetically, then you would have spelled many words differently than what your predecessors did. The same Catellano, it was pronounced differently in Spain, too. I used to travel in Spain for more than 40 days, in some areas, people constantly omitted "s" and "z" sound in their speaking. The famous "Por que no te callas" said the King Carlos, I listened to it many many times, I never heard "s". Just stick to the rules of pronunciation you learnt, Castellano was pronounced differently in Iberia Peninsula let alone huge continent from Tierra del Fuego to California & Texas US. I myself think listening comprehension is largely based on one's vocabulary.
3. SpanishDict Lesson 2.1 & 2.2
I have the transcripts of these 2 lessons, I am not sure if I published them on this blog. Let me check it later; if not, I will publish them.

Hi, Frank,
OK, I just apply for the membership of PChome. I don't know anything about its security system, and the message board compulsorily sets the invisible mode for me--I can't change it! So, don't get me wrong! And please delete all the messages I left previously except the one you haven't answered. Will you reply it? Or, would you please reply it with this message?

I see. Then are you able to read this message alright? I deleted the messages you left, but I accidentally deleted the one that I have not answered. So, I would just reply as far as I remember, if anything missed, then you just pose me again.
1. The pronunciation of R in the initial of a word or RR in a word.
It was very difficult for me to pronounce it as well. I asked many people of the tips about how to. The fact is that it took me 5 years to acquire the technique of pronouncing this kind of "alveolar trill". In that 5 years, I tried to pronounce it whenever I could, on the way to the school (on the bus, riding a bike, or walking), watching TV, .... one night on the duty of sentry, I got it. I was not sure how, but I just got it. I was overwhelmingly happy, on the way back to the base camp, I hummed, ... the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain...rosa, perro, Roma, arroyo... I finally got it! Well, I thank everyone who provided me with tips, but I am not sure which one works. I just google it, and found plenty of tips available on internet, so I think you can get many good tips and listen to it repeatedly. I do not think the way I acquired that technique good, otherwise it would not take me 5 yr.
I exceeded the limit of this column allowed, so I removed the rest but leave the first part here.
Now I remembered why I did not post other SpanishDict lessons that I already made the transcripts of, because it did not (and still does not) allow me to embed the video of SpanishDict which makes use of "
http://blip.tv/",
I encountered the same problem when I tried to post those lessons you asked me of. I need to study on this to see if any solution.
