Enjoying the Simple French Way of Life ~

Tucked away on the quiet end of Main Street, Cafe Monmartre is a long, narrow hideaway that harkens back to the days when neighbourhood radicals philosophized over glasses of red wine while nodding along to jazz standards performed by whiskey-soaked divas. Live music Tuesday through Saturday, spoken word and music Sunday evenings and actors improv Monday nights.

Mind you, their menu is small and unconvoluted - in fact, if there is anything savoury in there, it is mostly Chicken , and I suppose you can't go wrong with Chicken. Good crepes though...and nice baked brie.

If I had to make one complaint, I would recommend that patrons avoid sitting near the open kitchen. Things can get a little hot there. Ah, C'est la vie.

The space at Cafe Montmartre appears narrow and tight for new visitors but once you get to sit down, your perception will slowly change. The mood in the room is predominantly red and black, with some French framed posters and ads lining the walls . The wooden chairs, tables, and banquettes are very modest and worn - reflecting the vibes of Main Street's antique/furniture merchants that operate on the same block. From the decor alone, I did not get the sense of Champs-Elysees cafe authenticity - but that did not matter. More importantly, it seemed like a place where poets, artists, and musicians would come to hang out and have coffee and crepes ... and perhaps a glass of their wine while relaxing with friends. If anything, that quality captured the essence of a Parisian cafe.
