"Wake Me Up When September Ends" is the fourth single from Green Day's epic album American Idiot. The music video, which was directed by Samuel Bayer, depicts the aftermath of 9/11 from the perspectives of a teenage couple. Therefore many thought that the song is as political as the other songs on American Idiot.
However, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong did make it perfectly clear that the song is actually about his father who died on September 10 when he was 10 years old.
"If there's one song that kind of veers away from the story for the album a little bit, it's that one. It's just a personal thing. I've never really tackled an issue like singing about my father, or anything like that," Billie Joe Armstrong said on VH1's Storytellers. "So it's just one of those songs. It's hard to sing, but definitely therapeutic."
