Dodgers rookie lefty dominates; Furcal, Nomar go deep
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Rookie Hong-Chih Kuo, making his first Major League start as an emergency sub for the injured Chad Billingsley, pitched six scoreless innings Friday night as the Dodgers blanked the Mets, 5-0, to assure at least another day in first place.
Kuo, who spent five years battling back from two Tommy John elbow reconstructions, allowed only three singles and struck out seven. The left-hander made 90 pitches, some clocked as fast as 96 mph.

The Dodgers gave Kuo an early lead against fellow rookie John Maine with a pair of unearned first-inning runs that scored when third baseman David Wright fielded Marlon Anderson’s two-out grounder and threw wildly past first base.

Rafael Furcal, who started that rally with a single, added to the Dodgers’ advantage with a home run leading off the fifth inning. One out later, Nomar Garciaparra homered and J.D. Drew followed with a drive that would have been a home run, except center fielder Carlos Beltran caught it above the top of the fence.

Sixth-inning doubles by Russell Martin and Kenny Lofton added a fifth run.
