It is a 6-hr long Italian film. Yes, 6 hours!! I had little (or no) idea of what the movie was about when I bought the ticket. But now I can tell you - It’s a beautiful film! Not only with beautiful scenery (Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Sicily… u can imagine) and people (Italians are so handsome!!), the story is just beautiful. I feel so warm when I leave the cinema cos it shows how love and hope shine in life.
The film is about an Italian Family, the Caratis, from 1966 to 2003. The 2 brothers, Nicolas and Matteo are the main focuses of the film. Once very close to each other in their childhood, they went separate ways and in the end had very different destiny. The separation began when they failed to rescue a young girl, Georgia, who had mental illness and being abused in a rehabilitation centre. It was a big strike to both of them, but the two reacted very differently: Matteo, quite a sentimental person, quitted his study, joined the army (and later the police) and began to keep a distance from his family as well as from anyone else; Nicolas, with his heart always filled with hope and love, decided to be a psychiatrist to help people with mental problems.
Nicolas is my favourite character. He is just perfect! He is intelligent, righteous, courageous and humourous. He is a good son and brother, a super good father, a caring lover, a faithful friend and a good doctor. Well, sounds a bit unreal~~ But who cares? It’s a story, not a documentary!! And in fact, I didn’t find his character that unrealistic. Like all of us, he also has anger, frustration, disappointment, sadness, etc.; he also faces ups and downs in life. And he does not have an easy life – his wife ran away and became a terrorist; he raised his daughter single-handedly; being a doctor he was unable to help his dying father; his beloved brother committed suicide on the New Year’s Eve. But Love and Hope give him strength to get through all these difficult times. He remains positive in all times. He always looks forward for a better future, never looks back to have pity on oneself! And not only for himself, he also shares his love and hope with others – his family, friends, colleagues and patients.
Who doesn’t know what hope and love are? But who truly knows how to live with love and hope? Nicolas shows us how.
