Emirates is set to embark on a multi-million dollar investment programme to make its planes more comfortable, the company said on Thursday.
The Dubai-based airline plans to refurbish the interiors of its entire fleet of Boeing 777 long-haul aircraft.
The airline said the upgrade of first class on the new aircraft it is receiving alone would cost around AED 180 million ($49 million).
It would not reveal any further details on the total amount of investment.
Emirates said it was also close to finalising another multi-million dollar investment, this time to enhance its inflight entertainment system, but did not give any further details.
The refurbishment will see Emirates introduce new versions of its private suites in first class, lie-flat massage seats in business class, and extra legroom for passengers in economy.
The airline will also install what it claims are the industry’s largest personal TV screens in all classes.
The new interiors will first appear on Emirates’ Boeing 777-300ER ULR (Ultra Long Range) aircraft being delivered this month, and its 777-200LRs - the first of which will be delivered in August.
Over the next 18 months, Emirates will receive 24 new aircraft fitted with the updated interiors, and will also begin a programme to retrofit its existing Boeing 777 long-haul fleet.
“This massive investment firmly positions Emirates’ inflight product at the zenith, and widens our competitive edge in long-haul travel,” said Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline. “All these investments illustrate why Emirates continues to be world-class.”
The enhanced first class private suites have extended floor space, more stowage room and a bigger personal wardrobe within the suite.
It also features fine leather upholstery with a honey walnut finish and a raised cabin ceiling.
In business class, the multi-zone massage seats recline to a 78-inch long lie-flat bed and feature high privacy dividers.
While improvements to economy include a fully adjustable winged headrest in each seat, wide flat footrest and articulated seat bottom.
Emirates operates a fleet of 103 aircraft and has a $30 billion order book for 110 more wide-bodied aircraft, including 51 Boeing 777s and 47 Airbus A380s.
