〈 職人英語通）出師不利 Get off on the wrong foot!

任何一件事情在進展過程中起起伏伏總是難免，但有時候最慘的是，腳才跨出去第一步，就已經跨錯了，這就是中文裡面常說的「出師不利」；而英文裡則是用”get off on the wrong foot!（跨出的第一步都搞錯了）”，表喻衰到極點之意。

Carol：Hey, look who’s sitting next to me? The new kid on the block! Your first day on the job, excited?

Carol：嘿，看看是誰坐在我旁邊？新來的呢！第一天上班興奮嗎？

Kevin：Yes I was, but now I’m just hating myself and wanting to commit suicide once you all leave the office.

Kevin：本來是的，可現在我恨死我自己了，等你們都離開辦公室後，我巴不得把自己給殺了。

Carol：I like your sense of humor but something wrong? It’s only your first day on board.

Carol：我欣賞你的幽默感，但怎麼了？這不過是你報到的第一天欸。

Kevin：Well, I was the first one arriving at the office this morning and when I was getting myself a cup of coffee, this guy was standing next to me asking why I decided to join the company?

Kevin：唉，今天早上我是最早到辦公室的，然後我就去倒杯咖啡喝，有個人站在我旁邊就問我，為什麼會想要加入這間公司？

Carol：How did you answer him?

Carol：那你怎麼回答他？

Kevin：Without knowing he’s our CEO, I just said I’d like a job that pays my bills and ideally, I can still have a private life…. It’s only when he introduced himself to me, I realized that I got off on the wrong foot the first day at work by saying all those things

Kevin：我哪知道他是總裁先生，我就說我想要一份能讓我付賬單的工作，而且最理想的狀況是我還能有自己的私生活…。等他自我介紹說他是總裁時，我才知道我真是上班第一天就出師不利，講了那一堆話。

Carol：Not necessarily, our CEO is more result-oriented. As long as you get your work done well, other issues don’t bother him at all.

Carol：也不見得啦，我們總裁是很注重結果的，只要你把事情做好，其他事他是不在乎的。
