Gilbert was smoking in his car when he was driving home. He felt very tired after he had driven for a whole day.
The night was so dark and the fog was so dense. Gilbert couldn't see the road clearly. As he drove on the road, he saw a lady stood under the orange street light.
Gilbert wondered what the lady was standing there for. He drove the car closer to see her more clearly. The lady was in a blouse and with brown curly hair. Her face was very pale and there was a strange smile on it.
Gilbert was shivering while the lady stared at him. He couldn't even move when she opened the car door and sat inside.
The lady told him an address with a sweet voice. Gilbert felt a chill as if someone dropped ice down his neck. He drove as fast as he could. He had never been scared like that before.
"Here you are, madam." Gilbert said with a trembling voice when they arrived.
The lady gave him a smile and got off into the darkness. He was so scared that he didn't notice about the ring which the lady put down on the seat before she got off.
Gilbert found the ring the next morning. When he went to his car and prepared to work, there was something shining under the sunlight in his car. He opened the car door and picked it up. It was a ring, a shiny golden ring and he could see a name – "Catherine" engraved on it.
He was wondering whom the ring belonged to and there was another thought coming up to his mind. "This ring looks so valuable; maybe it will bring me some fortune." He thought to himself and put it into his pocket carefully.
One day, he went to a jewellery shop to sell the ring. It was really invaluable and was sold at a considerable price. Gilbert was very happy with that. He thought he was lucky that someone had left a valuable ring in his car.
When he went back home in the afternoon, there was a lady standing outside his house. It was her, the lady who sat on his car that night.
"You sold my ring, didn't you?" she smiled and said. Gilbert was frightened. How did she know where he lived? And how did she know the ring was sold?
"I … I apologise for that. I didn't know the ring was yours. I …" he said fearfully.
"It doesn't matter." She said, "My ring is still in your pocket. But now, you must pay for your greed."
Gilbert checked his pocket. The ring was still there. He took it out and looked. The name ‘Catherine’ was shining under the setting sun.
"How…" he raised his head but there was no one there except himself.
Gilbert was becoming mad since that evening. He seemed to hear someone laughing behind him and saw a lady with brown curly hair stared at him whenever he closed his eyes. He woke up by the nightmare every night and his health was getting worse and worse.
He felt so much regret for his greed. He would give the ring back to the lady and apologise to her. But, how could he find her?
Suddenly, a thought come up in his mind. He ran out to his car and drove to the address where the lady got off his car that night. It was the only place where he might be able to find her.
He stopped his car and got off to look for her. He searched around the place and asked people about the lady. But no one had ever seen her before.
Gilbert went back to his car hopelessly. What could he do now? He didn't know. Might be he should go and gave the ring to the police.
"Are you looking for me, Gilbert?" a sweet voice said behind him suddenly. He could feel that his heart was almost jumped out from his mouth. He turned around. The lady was standing right behind him.
"Yes, I am." Gilbert said seriously and took out the ring from his pocket. "I have to apologise for selling your ring and keeping it for so long. I am regretful for that so I come here to give it back to you."
The lady looked at the ring and said, "You are a strange man. I can tell you that no one had ever given it back to me before they were being killed."
"What do you mean they were being killed?" asked Gilbert.
"That means you don't need to give the ring back to me. I will take it from you by myself after you are dead." The lady laughed and walked away.
Gilbert couldn't move for a while. His legs were shaking with fear. His heart was full of anguish and anger. He didn't understand why he had to die and why didn't the lady let him off. He drove to the beach and threw the ring into the sea angrily.
"That's all over." He thought.
He felt very tired when he went back home. He went straight to bed and fell asleep at once. But soon, he was wakening up again. That wasn't the nightmare this time, but the water.
Gilbert jumped up from his bed. His clothes were completely wet and the water was rushing out from his pocket. He put his hand into his pocket and found that there was something inside.
He was stunned when he took it out. It was the ring which he had thrown into the sea and it came back with the water!
Gilbert became mad and crazy. He lighted up the fire place and threw that evil ring into it.
"Turn into dust and leave me forever!" he shouted to the ring and ran out his house.
In the next day's newspaper, there was a small title – A strange burnt corpse was found in a local park.
