AT 25, Wang Lee Hom is many things. An acclaimed singer-songwriter. A musical boy wonder who composes and produces his own music. A poetic soul whose romantic lyrics soothe the love-lorn. He is, however, not a style-savvy fashionista. Or so he says.
The pictures on his latest album The One and Only suggest therwise. After all, isn't he looking dapper in classy cool threads, lovely feathered locks falling over his pretty face?
"It's not a conscious attempt to create a new image for myself. I do not pay much attention to clothes, nor do I care very much about the way I look," proffers LeeHom flatly. "What's important to me is music. I pretty much don't sleep or eat when I'm recording."
We get it. A hopeless workaholic when making music, plain hopeless when it comes to fashion. Questions about his fashion favourites are met with furrowed brows and replies scantier than a Gucci thong. But ask him about musical styles and LeeHom brightens like Jane Austen must have, confronted with a new blotter. "I think I'm like Prince. his music is very varied. That's the way I want to be."
8 DAYS: But, you're not exactly Prince when it comes to making a fashion statement.
No, I'm not. I don't even buy my own clothes. My stylist does my shopping. But I'd say I'm an open book when it comes to fashion. I'd wear anything, if I'm comfortable in it. Except maybe a ballerina outfit.Yeah, you probably wouldn't be able to make me wear a ballerina outfit.
You look like you've lost some weight.
That's what I hear. I don't really care. I probably was in much better shape when I was shooting China Strike Force. I was working out everyday because it was an action film. But my body type is really skinny, so I have to work really hard to put on weight. Plus I tend to not eat when I'm in the studio. And, I don't have a girlfriend to remind me to eat or to go out...
... or help you pick out your clothes. but we have to say, you've done a pretty good job so far
I don't have a talent for looking at an outfit and going 'oh this will look good on me or this will look bad on me'. I've worn lots of things in the past that make me cringe now. Those inside out blue jeans I wore years ago, when I released my second album. That was bad.
Do you think good looks distract people from your music?
(laughs) I appreciate the comments about the good looks...
You're welcome.
... but no I don't think it distracts people from enjoyng my music.Good looks fade and good art doesn't.
But you must get pissed when reporters want to know more about your fashion philosophy than your music.
Not really, because I let them know right away that there isn't much there. There're a lot of dumb artistes who don't know nuts about music. it's the same thing when you ask me about fashion - (tugs at his shirt)I don't even know what brand this is.
Well, for the record, what is your fashion philosophy?
I think when a person wears something, they should wear it with confidence.
Prince wrote a song called 'Raspberry Beret'. Is there anything in your closet you could write a song about?
I have these two suitcases that have stayed with me over the years when I'm not home in Boston. I could probably write a song about my suitcases. I think of them as my home. I'm not like most people who pack their suitcases, thinking 'Oh I'm going on a vacation for a couple of weeks and I need my toothbrush...' I have pictures of my friends, and letters from my loved ones in my suitcases. Everything I need emotionally is in my suitcases. it's very personal.
What we'd really like to know is... where you stand on facial hair.
Actually, I have a lot of facial hair. When I'm working on my album, I don't shave at all and I grow a full beard. But it makes me look like I'm thirty-five and I'm practically unrecognisable. But I'd my stand on fmpusanna_kong
