My family is average size: four people. My younger brother is serving in the army, and he will be discharged from military service this April. My younger sister has been married for two years and has two children. Her husband was her elementary school classmate.
My parents were very busy when we were children, and we were brought up by our grandparents. Until I studied in senior high, we often moved to live with our parents. My father was a writer of legal documents and my mother was a cook in the hospital (VGHTC). Though she was a cook, she never cooked delicious food at home. That’s a kind of occupational disease I think. All of us are of a broadminded and outspoken disposition, and we get along with others. I am quite conservative, maybe because I was brought up by my grandmother..
In my family, unless we too far, my parents wouldn’t teach us what we should do or should not do. Hence we wasted a lot of time groping our way along towards the future.
Ordinarily I like to read, listen to music, go to the library, see the movies, play computers and go to gym. Sometimes on the weekend, I like to go out with old friends. When I was a student, I was not always heading the list of successful candidates. I got intermediate grades, and I joined many kinds of groups since senior high.
I liked to join the activities at the YMCA in winter and summer vacation when I was in junior and senior high. I like to travel. After I graduated from senior high school, I went traveling around Taiwan by train for 2 weeks with one of my classmates. It was an unforgettable memory. My interest is music although everyone in my country thinks of nothing but entering a higher school, and pay no attention to the real purposes of education.
I joined the chorus in the second semester of my freshman year. I planed to join different activities in every vacation. For example, the first winter vacation of my freshman year, I joined the group of International Trade Association set up by the YMCA. The summer vacation between my freshman and sophomore year, I stayed in Kaohsiung and I went to the laboratory of physiology to learn how the work in that kind of environment. On the other side, I went to Global Village to improve my English abilities.
In the first year of my university life, I just to fill up all of my time. After class, I was a private tutor of an elementary school student. It was really hard. What I had to do was not only teach, but also had to take the responsibility of the student’s daily life, as her mother asked me to do. The student didn’t have a father, and her mother was too busy to care for her. I had a lot of pressure caring for her. After about two months, I resigned from the job. The student said that I was easy going and she often bullied me and I didn’t care about it.
In the first year, I refused a chance to be a handcore member of the class and the association of chorus cause there were too many difficult things off the campus and I had to get used to the new lifestyle. Thought Kaohsiung is a part of Taiwan, I had to get used to the new lifestyle. Though Kaohsiung is a part of Taiwan, I had to spend a lot of time to get used to living here like having to buy bottles of “water” and I having to know where to buy food things like that.
In my second year of university, I transferred my attention to the community. I took charge of the photography club, the chorus association and vice president of the class. It was a really busy life and at the same time we prepared for the presentation of a chorus winter vacation in German. I couldn’t describe how much pressure I had. And there were no family to live with, and we had to do everything by ourselves. We went to Europe for two weeks in the winter vacation of my sophomore year. School started on the day after we got back to Taiwan. We had no time to adjust to the time difference.
The next semester, I paid all my attention to the lessons. I did some services for the church at the community center. The summer vacation between my sophomore and junior year, some members of the community led a team at the Children’s English Camp for one week for the children of the community and the church. It was really unforgettable and I couldn’t believed that those children are so amazing.
In my junior year, we were trained in the hospital all year. Terrible lives for one year. Though we read a lot, while we touch with people (patients and patients’ family), it was different form what we thought it would be. In the beginning, I couldn’t speak Taiwanese at all. After that year, I could speak Taiwanese as well as English.
And it was also my first time to study in the hospital for such a long time. The subjects I trained in were urology, neurology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology maternity, orthopedics, the surgery of neurology, the administration of public affairs of the health center for two weeks (Because of SARS, the training was shortened by half). We went to the local health center for one month to learn how they work. After one year, I improved my skills of medical communication and was able to collect the basic information of the cases, prepare a case report, translate papers analyze, and control time. The most important thing is more independent. The graduation was the same time as the SARS epidemic. It was an unforgettable experience. We could see all Taiwanese feeling insecure. I really thought that the government didn’t pay attention to the system of medical treatment. Most people only care about the cost of the medical insurance, but few people care about the quality. I even lost confidence in my major- nursing. I was worried about the future then.
