奧斯卡最佳影片入圍(一)-火線交錯 Babel

火線交錯 (亞利安卓崗札雷伊納利圖,2006)

在歷史的演進中,地域隨著人類的進化開始出現,進而成為現在的五大洲,空間的距離造成語言差異,但在宗教的觀念中,這卻被視為神對自傲人類的懲罰。亞利安卓崗札雷伊納利圖和吉耶莫阿里亞加還是鍾情於人類自我救贖的主題,只是這次的空間一下從墨西哥或美國延伸到橫跨三大洲。

面臨婚姻危機的瓊斯夫婦試圖藉由摩洛哥之旅改善現況,身處兩人皆興味索然的邊疆地帶卻只是持續僵化的狀態,直到一顆天外飛來的子彈改變這一切。原本已計劃返鄉參加兒子婚禮的褓母艾蜜利雅,因瓊斯夫婦遭遇意外無法準時回國又臨時遍尋不著幫助,只好帶著這兩個就像她親生子女的孩子上路,沒想到這個無傷大雅的決定卻成為她人生的轉捩點。

拿著父親私下買來對付野狼的槍,兩個摩洛哥牧羊人家的小孩無心的射擊試驗,改變整個家庭的未來。在摩洛哥狩獵時將槍送給導遊的日本人,有個渴望和外界溝通的聾啞女兒在世界另一個角落的日本家鄉。

一個小舉動引發的連鎖效應,四個平行(但不同時)進行的故事使本片具有相當的飽滿度和拼圖般導致人物命運的發展,只是不比「愛是一條狗」的緊密,也沒有「靈魂的重量」那麼深沉的人性刻劃,可惜地使這個傑出的構思缺乏本來可以有更完整的呈現。

但本片仍無庸置疑地是部年度佳作,除了伊納利圖和阿里亞加的編導組合,全體演員的表現也在水準之上,尤其飾演褓母的亞德莉安娜巴拉薩在面臨危機時的焦急,和日本女兒菊地凜子青少年時期加上聾啞的多層次情感,是本片最搶眼的兩個角色。

溝通的障礙不只來自遙遠距離或不同文化,更是來自人類之間的隔閡,只要放下心防和自我意識而相互傾聽,任何人都能破解「巴貝塔」的懲戒,最需要溝通的對象永遠就是在自己身邊。

Babel (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2006)

In the involving of the history, territories appeared along the evolution of mankind and became the five continents in the present. The distance of space cause the difference of language, but in the vision of religion, it’s a punishment to the proud humans by God. Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo Arriaga still found of the theme of the redemption of human beings, only the space suddenly extended from Mexico or the States to three of the continents.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones, who’re facing the crisis of their marriage, try to improve by the trip to Morocco. But being in a margin area that both of them are not interested in, it only maintains the status of frozen until a bullet comes from nowhere changes all this. Originally plans to join the son’s wedding but because of Jones’s accident delayed their schedule of arriving home and couldn’t find any help all of the sudden, Amelia the nanny has to bring the two children who are like her own on the way. But she could never imagine this harmless decision becomes the turning point of her life.

Carrying the gun their father bought privately to deal with the wolves, the shooting test which has no intention by the two kids from a Moroccan sheep farming family changes the fate of the family. A Japanese guy who gives his gun to a tour guide during his hunting trip in Morocco has a daughter who’s mute and deaf and tries hard to communicate with outside in his hometown Japan, the other corner of the world.

The chain reaction triggers by a small action. Four parallel (but not at the same time) story makes the film quite enrich and has a development lead to characters’ fate as puzzles. Just it’s not as tight as “Amores Perros” or as deep inside humanity as “21 Grams.” It’s a little pity of this outstanding idea that could have had a more complete presentation.

But this film is without doubt one of the best of the year. Except for the once-again successful combination of Iñárritu and Arriaga, the performance by the ensemble cast is above the standard level, especially Adrianna Barraza, who plays the nanny, shows her anxiety when facing the crisis, and Rinko Kikuchi, who plays the Japanese girl, expresses the multiple emotions of a teenager and a mute-deaf. They are the two most shining characters in the film.

The obstacles of communication not only come from the far distance or the different cultures but also come from the wall between humans. Just put down the defense and ego and listens to each other, everyone can break the punishment of “Babel.” The persons who need to communicate with the most are always around you.
