July 12, 2004 - Video Store magazine says it simply: "The snapper is on its way out." Warner Home Video is quietly phasing out the despised DVD packaging and switching to Amaray keep cases, like the rest of the world.

Warner told VS that the studio is not completely discontinuing the snapper in the next year, but its use will continue to decline. One title that appears to be getting a snapper is The Iron Giant: Special Edition. The decision came as a result of internal research that said consumers prefer the Amaray-style packaging.

We first noticed the trend earlier this year, with double-disc Warner titles adopting Amaray casing. The 2002 release of JFK, for instance, had a snapper where the second disc was in a paper sleeve and tucked into a slit in the snapper case cover. In the process of taking the disc in and out of the case, you had a good chance of breaking the disc, tearing the case, or both. Last year's reissue was on a two-disc digipak.

This may not be the only packaging change down the pike, according to Video Store. Warner research also found storage space is becoming an issue for consumers that may ultimately affect purchases, which has studios reportedly exploring new packaging designs.
