Tradition and Innovation: A Festival Weekend

還有那位young little boy fan

In the Artist’s own word:

In the process of developing this Tradition and Innovation workshop, I found myself reflecting on the many musical conversations I have had with esteemed colleagues. I drew inspiration particularly from the words of Isaac Stern, who said that musicianship is what happens between the notes, and Daniel Barenboim, who believes that to be part of any artistic endeavor, one has to start from the inside.

Today, the regions encompassed by the historic Silk Road trade routes are home to more than half the world’s population. With continuing improvements in communication and travel, lands that were once considered distant are no longer thought so—we are all becoming neighbors. At the Silk Road Project, we have discovered that our neighbors along that ancient trade route include extraordinary musical innovators, people who are giving new life to deeply rooted traditions.

It is crucial that young musicians have the tools to understand not only their own musical language, but their neighbors’ as well. The young musicians who were selected for this workshop will develop those tools; by watching, playing, and conversing with musicians who speak other musical languages, they will learn “what happens between the notes.” Shared experiences form the basis of communication and will enable the workshop participants to see these traditions, as Daniel recommends, from the inside.

In our increasingly complex world, the Silk Road Project is making a declaration of interdependence. Through a wide variety of programs, including workshops such as this, the Silk Road Project is giving musicians the tools to become active participants in shaping our future musical community.
