上學期take了一堂Cell Biology,
是我的主修班﹐i.e., major requirement,
每逢主修的必修班都一定難﹐
因為修那班的學生都會很認真﹐而我們的grade又是curve的﹐
那位Professor 明顯是位古典音樂愛好者﹐
那一堂開始之前都會播一首樂曲以及放一段片段﹐
片段大多是非常Amazing (至少我認為)的Biological phenomenon﹐
而且因為我實習的實驗室是做Microscopic imaging research的﹐
我對那些顯微鏡中的會動的彩色生命有一種說不出來的敏感及喜愛。
加上那位Professor竟然會以最容易令我感動的樂章作為背景音樂﹐
我真的好喜歡那堂課。
當我喜歡那堂﹐95%機會我會在那課做得很好。
不過我這次要說的不是Cell Biology或那位Professor,
而是最後那課他播的一段令我全身蘇痲的樂曲﹐
最特別的是﹐那不是各人都知我最喜愛的instrumental music,
而是一首聲樂。
其實未來美國之前﹐我根本未懂得去欣賞vocal music。
所以有時我都覺得生命變化很大﹐很神奇。
之前他播過很多不同的music﹐
而且很榮幸地﹐我發現我認得其中七八成他選的歌曲,
每次他都選擇不同的組合及曲式﹐eg symphony, violin concerto, piano solos...
此舉也深深地在我心中留下了痕跡。
不過可能是最後一堂的關係﹐
加上他那次播了一段最gorgeous的片段﹐
把第一堂至最後一堂每一次的片段剪接成一個大introduction,
Background就播起Time to say goodbye 這首歌.....

但是聽完之後﹐我沒有不捨﹐
反而覺得非常感動﹐溫暖﹐
最後那堂課也正是教關於Apoptosis的﹐
那是我們每一個沒有遇上意外的細胞都注定要經過的過程--
自然死忙。
世上一切都有始﹐有終。
因為我本來不知道關於那首歌的任何質科﹐
面皮厚厚的我在Professor的Office hour裡問了他那首歌﹐
不過原來在場的其他同學也有感興趣的﹐
所以Professor就告訴了我們這首歌的故事﹕
原本是一位不太成功的﹐雙目失明的男歌手的歌曲。
有一次他在一個在餐廳裡進行的例行演唱﹐
在坐有一位已經成名的女高音聽了他那首歌﹐
在人群漸散時問他可不可以讓那支歌的版權賣給她。
她在她的大碟裡唱了這首歌﹐
歌迷好評如潮。
不過其實她後來在灌錄的時候就發現﹐
原來沒有了那把男聲﹐那支歌的味道就總是少了一點。
所以她邀請他跟她一塊唱。
結果﹐直升流行榜第一位。
全歐洲都在討論這支歌。
之後﹐那首歌就是兩個人唱的了。
為打入美國市場﹐所以後來又在歌中加了一句英文。

聽完教授的話﹐我簡直不知道該說些什麼好。

無論是那首歌或背後那段故事都令我叫絕﹐
難忘的﹐
卻其實是在課室裡聽著感動著的那一霎間...
知道嗎? 那份感覺是如何也找不回來的。
而生命的每一個環節也不能再一模一樣的重複﹐
每一刻其實都是那麼特別﹐
也就是因為那獨一無二﹐
我視之為珍貴。

Every moment is a special moment.
Appreciate each moment in life.
I now understand that every moment in life is telling us something.

In November 1996 the duet Time to say goodbye by Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli became in a few weeks time a big hit in Germany and later on also in several other countries of continental of Europe. And after it was performed on a T.V. programme of the National Lottery on 10 May 1997 it also become very swiftly successful in the Great Britain.
On 19 May 1997 there was an article in The Independent about the success and the background of this song and Andrea Bocelli.
Around that time, Sarah's CD Timeless, which includes this song, was released.
For the USA and other parts of the World, the order of the songs on that CD were changed and the CD was released under the title Time to say goodbye -- probably to get sell more CDs, as the duet had become famous by then in the USA too.
The song is a new version of a song originally sung by Andrea Bocelli in Italian (see the article from The Independent).

Fast track for tenor from Tuscany, by Clare Garner
It has taken just one week for Andrea Bocelli to storm the British charts. The blind Tuscan tenor was a complete unknown when he performed on the National Lottery show last week. Now, after minimal radio air-play, he has gone straight to the Number Two slot.
The single, a romantic Italian duet entitled "Time to Say Goodbye" ("Con Te Partiro") and sung by Bocelli and Sarah Brightman, was originally recorded by Bocelli alone. The story goes that Ms Brightman was so enchanted when she heard the solo version in a restaurant that she asked staff about it. She had been asked to find a song to sing at the retirement fight of the German world light-heavyweight champion, Henry Maske, and felt "Con Te Partiro" was perfect.
Having tracked Bocelli down, the song was re-recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and the pair's performance in the ring in November delighted the crowd. Even Maske wept.
Since then "Con Te Partiro" has become the biggest selling single of all time in Germany, with sales approaching the three million mark. It is still in the top ten in Germany after 10 weeks at Number One and five months in the top three.
Over the last year Andrea has also claimed Number One spots on pop album and single charts in France, Holland, Belgium and Switzerland.
Since being discovered by Luciano Pavarotti in 1992, Bocelli, 38, has taken master classes with the maestro. He has sung for the Pope, with Pavarotti, Bryan Adams and Bryan Ferry. He was born with a visual defect and, at the age of 12, he lost his sight completely after an accident playing football. Bocelli is adamant that, for him, his blindness was in no way a tragedy. "The tragedy is that people continue to make a fuss out of something which they consider tragic, not I."
In 1992, Bocelli assisted Zucchero, the Italian rock star best known in Britain for this duet with Paul Young, "Senza Una Donna" ("Without a Woman"), on a demo track. Zucchero had written the track with Bono of U2, entitled "Miserere", intended as a duet with Pavarotti.
Zucchero invited Andrea to perform Pavarotti's vocals for a demo designed to convince the maestro to record the duet. When Pavarotti received the demo, he demanded. "Who is this guy? Thank you for writing such a wonderful song. Yet you do not need me to sing it. Let Andrea sing 'Miserere' with you, for there is no one finer."
