Darcey Bussell - Farewell

Not many ballerinas cross over the divide from dance fame to celebrity in the wider world. Darcey Bussell, who will be retiring from the Royal Ballet on June 8 in a gala event that will include a television special, is one of the few. There’s a painting of her in the National Portrait Gallery, a larger-than-life sculpture of her above the entrance to a shopping arcade on Oxford Street and she’s a CBE.

Bussell has frequently been featured in glossy magazines, dripping in diamonds or clad in chic leathers. Not since Margot Fonteyn has an English Rose managed to accrue so much public recognition.

Now the Ballet Boyz, William Trevitt and Michael Nunn, who have been her pals since schooldays, have put together a celebratory evening in Bussell’s honour. It comes complete with those interspersed film clips that have become a Boyz signature device.

Talking to the camera from her dressing room while applying her stage makeup, Bussell ranges across her career and makes it plain that her departure from the Royal is not a gimmick. “I’m ruling out any comebacks,” she insists.

An indication of the loyalty Bussell generates is that her first Royal Ballet partner Jonathan Cope has hauled himself out of retirement to be part of her party. They perform the serenely mysterious duet from Christopher Wheeldon’s Tryst. This is Bussell at her streamlined best and it’s a treat to see the two of them reunited one last time.

The main event of the evening, which takes up the second half, is Kenneth MacMillan’s Winter Dreams, his 40-minute gloss of Chekhov’s The Three Sisters. Here Bussell is the passionate central sister, desperately willing to sacrifice her middle-class married respectability for illicit love.

Bussell and the Italian Roberto Bolle have frequently danced together in recent years. They make a handsome couple in both Winter Dreams and in a sizzling duet from William Forsythe’s In the middle somewhat elevated.

They are less successful with the final pas de deux from Frederick Ashton’s Sylvia, although the rapturous audience didn’t seem to mind.

Winter Dreams is a large ensemble piece. Trevitt and Nunn play deadly rivals for Tamara Rojo, the youngest of the three sisters; Cope is Bussell’s lacklustre husband. Each of them is on top form. No question about it, Bussell is leaving while still at a peak of physical perfection. This programme is a fine and a fondly felt adieu.

再於上星期去了london3天看她的final curtain call

不過,真的很感動
絕對值得早上5時便去到royal opera house排隊

起不了床也要起啊!
千里迢迢走到london
要是買不到票
我想我會難過死

我睇完song of the earth就返左香港了
