I participated in the study experiment whose purposes are to know how foreigners learn English grammar and which strategies they use in these two weeks. It was about Dative verbs.

For example,
I bought a gift to her.
I bought her a gift.
In this case, ”bought” is a Dative verb.

It seems that these two sentences have the same idea. Actually, they still have the slight distinction.

I discussed this with Charlie, who is a Linguistic under student. He said these two sentences have the same indication in the general English. He learned this section in his Linguistic class. For English related researchers, they are different.
His explanation is as follows,

I bought a gift to her. → It means that I bought a gift first, and then I gave her the gift. It includes and describes two actions.

I bought her a gift. → It just describes I gave her a gift.

Make sense?

Maybe.... This concept helped me to answer the questions today. My grade this week is much better than last week.

After doing the experiment in these 2 weeks, I learn something about this.
Here they are.


The Theme is something that is being given or told, ex. a present or a story.
The Receiver is someone or something who receives the present or who hears the story.

Theme before Receiver ＝＞ ex. give sth. to sb. (He gave a book to her)
Receiver before Theme ＝＞ ex. send sb. sth. (I sent him email)


There are some situations,

1) Theme is a pronoun, old information, or a specific thing or perosn, it often comes FIRST.

2) Receiver is a full noun, new or a nonspecific thing or person, it often comes LAST.

3) Receiver is longer than Theme, Receiver often comes LAST.

4) If the action and Theme are concrete, Theme often comes FIRST.

Now, I am gonna make a conclusion...
