Dan Hill 來自加拿大多倫多的創作歌手，父母親都是美國人。父親丹Dan Hill 三世是個黑人，母親Donna Bender是個白人。
Dan Hill 三世出生於美國中西部密蘇里州，在美國西部長大，1948年本科畢業於美國的“黑人大學”，華盛頓DC的Howard大學。他和丹娜當年跨越種族戀愛，在美國受到黑人和白人的歧視，為了逃離種族主義和麥卡錫主義的雙重壓制，為了未來的家，他們流亡移民到加拿大。
Dan Hill 14歲開始彈吉他，寫歌詞，17歲高中綴學，專職歌曲寫作。“Sometimes When We Touch”是1977年同Barry Mann合寫的，這首歌是他在1977年出版的第二張專輯裡創作並演唱的, 在當年得到了全美排行榜第三名的好成績, 也使他一夜成名當時賣了一百多萬份。他熱誠的演唱風格和外露的傷感歌詞，也曾受到加拿大國內某些人的嘲弄和批評。
一位元音樂同行對他的評價恰如其分“他的聲音是種令人心痛的哀訴：強言真摯和熱誠，哪怕是最感傷的歌詞；展示弱點和傷口，猶如兩性戰場上飄揚的白旗。”
