今天竟然看到學校既webmail:

Dear colleagues and students,

A number of countries are reporting cases of avian influenza, commonly referred to as Bird Flu in their domestic and wild bird populations. The H5N1 strain of influenza causes severe disease in domesticated fowl.

Avian influenza is commonly caused by influenza A (H5N1) and influenza A (H9N2) viruses. Up till now, we have evidence that avian influenza normally infects birds and, less commonly, pigs and feline (cats, tigers etc.). While all bird species are thought to be susceptible to infection, poultry are especially vulnerable to infections resulting in epidemics.

Some strains of avian influenza can be transmitted from infected birds to humans. Up to this moment, evidence suggests that human-to-human transmission has been inefficient.

Initial symptoms of avian influenza are similar to those caused by other human influenza viruses, such as fever, headache, muscle pain, runny nose, cough and sore throat. The disease may progress to develop high fever, chest infection, respiratory failure, multi-organ failure and death.

The continual circulation of avian influenza in birds and the close proximity of birds to human beings increase the chance of an unprotected individual being exposed to an infectious and potentially deadly agent. When people are concurrently infected with human and avian influenza virus strains, they may serve as the mixing vessel for the emergence of a novel subtype of virus having sufficient human influenza genes to facilitate transmission from person to person. The event could mark the beginning of an influenza pandemic. It is difficult to predict the likelihood of this occurring.

As advised by the Department of Health, eight steps could be taken to protect yourself from the Influenza Pandemic (including Avian Influenza). Details of the eight steps in Chinese and English version are attached for your reference.
