昨天在寫McKinsey的履歷的時候,他們問的一個問題是,「講講你是怎麼樣的人?」我覺得很有趣,所以把我寫的東西貼上來。
I am the eldest child in my family and I have always been asked to be independent and be a role model for my younger brother. I am from Taitung, one of the smallest cities in Taiwan, and I left my hometown for Taipei, the capital, when I was 15. I was studying in the best girls’ high school, Taipei First Girls’ High School. It was the first tough challenge in my life. I have to live without my family and I lived alone, trying to take care of myself. There were a lot of difficulties and I got Hyperthyroid when I was in the first year of high school. My teacher told me that maybe I was not made for that high school, but I did not withdraw from the school. I took a year of rest to control my ailment and work on my English in Oxford. I came back to school a year later and I was the top student in my high school. Hence, throughout my studies and my path of life till now, I believe that hard work and determination can overcome a lot of difficulties.
I was chosen by Rotary International in my second year of high school to go to France for one year. Most of Taiwanese high school students will never go abroad to study before the students enter the final year because we have an entrance exam for college in Taiwan and going abroad at that point of time seems to be unwise. However, I chose to go. I think having more global experiences is more important than having a good academic performance and I was right about that. I came back to Taiwan one year later and I was able to speak French fluently due to my studies in French high school. Moreover, I was able to catch up with my classmates and eventually entered one of the best social sciences universities in Taiwan.
I think I am sometimes headstrong. When people say that I cannot make it, I will try even harder to overcome my shortcomings. During my last semester in Elliott School of International Affairs, I took a course in Demographic Analysis, and it was a rough start for me. I have to admit that I have not been great in mathematics since I entered the high school. However, when a friend suggested that I should drop this course, I was tempted but I chose to stay in the class. I did extra works and I read a lot more than required for the course. I am not good at running the data but I am very good at analyzing the data and assess the situation based on the numbers. In one of the assignments, I got 98 over 100 with a remarking reading excellent. I got a relatively good grade at the end of semester. I am very proud of myself for I am not defeated and I am not afraid of challenges.
