2006 International Symposium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution

July 16, 2006–August 11, 2006

Location: Prague, Czech Republic

---
Political leaders who thrive on war-mongering and manipulating ethnic differences, increasingly scarce natural resources, the co-existence of dire poverty and immense wealth, weapons of mass destruction, displaced persons, destructive and dehumanizing images of the "other" all feed into the quagmire that is violent conflict. But there are alternatives. Ways exist to disentangle and analyze the elements of conflict in order to steer it towards a constructive course; there is an ever-growing body of knowledge and skill focused on transforming conflict and preventing it from becoming violent in the first place.

The nature of conflict, be it political, commercial, or local has changed over the past decade. There are more non-state actors involved, relationships among them are less defined, and opportunities to act abound. The challenges of the current state of world affairs require us now more than ever to respond more conscientiously and effectively with appropriate conflict resolution practices.

IIMCR’s International Student Symposium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution is specifically designed to prepare young people to do just that. By narrowing the divide between the theory and practice of conflict resolution, the Symposium challenges participants to understand and constructively address conflict in a rapidly changing international environment.

PROGRAM DETAILS

IIMCR believes that young people can and should play an important role in establishing peace and security in their communities, in their countries and regions, and in the world. IIMCR is the only organization specifically dedicated to the training of students and young professionals in the skills of conflict resolution. While we believe that young people are uniquely positioned to become catalysts for conflict resolution in the world, we also understand that constructive approaches to conflict are vastly under-taught and that there are few links between experienced professionals in the field of conflict resolution and young people eager to learn from them. Through its Symposia, IIMCR aims to build a bridge between these groups so that the older generation can pass along to future leaders the basic analytical frameworks and practical skills they have developed and employed to analyze, manage, and transform conflict effectively.

A PROGRAM CONSTRUCTED TO MEET AN URGENT NEED

This year, in cooperation with Arcadia University, IIMCR will invite a select group of students and young professionals to the tenth annual International Symposium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. This Symposium, IIMCR’s original program, aims to explore the phenomenon of conflict while examining the most current issues in international affairs and international law. While there, symposium students interact with a renowned faculty in the form of lectures, training exercises and simulations. The faculty is composed of scholars, negotiation and mediation experts, current and former diplomats, and conflict resolution practitioners, many of whom have participated in resolving some of the world’s most intransigent conflicts.

IIMCR has developed an interdisciplinary course grounded in theory, substance and hands-on simulation. The course draws heavily on the tools of practice as taught by scholars and trainers and on the real-world experiences of practitioners.
