BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (UPI) -- An Indiana woman cleaning the attic of a house that had been unoccupied for decades discovered a collection of 27 Indian skulls in a cabinet.

Kathleen Hollonbeck bought the house recently in Bloomington, Ind., and was noticing how the attic had been decorated in a Western motif, with the walls and ceiling painted to look like logs, and animal furs scattered around.

But she was horrified when she opened a cabinet and found the skulls, the Peoria (Ill.) Journal Star reported Thursday.

She called the police, who took them for safekeeping.

Bloomington Police Sgt. Henry Craft said the previous owner of the house, a dentist and avid collector of Indian artifacts, excavated the skulls sometime in the 1930s. When he died in 1982, and after his wife’s death in 1987, the house was willed to his son, who died last year.

”It’s the right thing to do to see (the skulls) get properly buried,” said Craft.

The U.S. Human Grave Protection Act came into law in the 1990s and made it a federal offense to disturb gravesites, the newspaper said.
