February 14 is a busy day. It’s busy for stores that sell cards and gifts.
It’s busy for flower shops. It;s busy for the post office.
Why?
Because it’s Valentine’s Day,and everyone is busy buying and seging valentines.
This is the day we remind our loved ones how much we really love them.
Valentine’s Day can be traced back many centuries.During Roman times, boys and girls would dance and play games on this day.
Then each boy would pick the name of a girl from a vase, and she would become his girlfriend for the year.
Today,Valentine’s Day is not just for lovers. We also give gifts to friends, parents, teachers, and others.
But still, most of all, people enjoy exchanging valentines with a sweetheart.
What do people give on Valentine’s Day? The ideal gift might be a heart-shaped box of expensive chocolates and a dozen red roses.
And this could be topped off with a candlelit dinner at a romantic restaurant.
But there is no need to spend so much money. The most popular valentine is simply a card.
And many people even make thier own. It might be very fancy, made of pink and red paper cut into haeart shapes, with lase and ribbon decorations.
Or it might be very simple, perhaps justa scrap of paper with these few words: ” Will you be my valentine?”
Some people like to give love poems to their sweethearts. They might copy down a famous poem in fancy handwriting, or even write their own. There is no need to be a great poet. Something silly or cute is fine, perhaps something like this:
Loving you is like
Sipping sweet,sweet wine.
Oh, won’t you please, oh please
Be my valentine?
Or maybe something like this:
Your love is truly
The light of my life.
I hope someday
You will be my wife.
Some people like to ”send ” valentines through the newspaper. Thet write a mwssage down and mail it to tje paper with a small fee. Instead of their real names, they often use nicknames or initials. The message will appear in the classified ad sectin. It might say simply ” Be My Valentine! ” or ” Be mine! ” Or might be an old-fashioned rhyme like this one :
Roses are red
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet,
And so are yor.
And so are you.
The End
