4.9 chat room (10:00—12:22)

Hi, students. Welcome to the chat room. We have Doris with us today.
Hi, Doris. Well, hi, Ken. It’s good to be on the chat room again. And what’s our topic for today? Well, we’re talking about the charm of Venice . Oh, the romantic Italian city on the water. Precisely. The city is on the water so why does our lesson say” Seeing Venice on foot is best” Venice is on the water not on our foot. No, Ken. Seeing Venice on foot is not saying Venice is on your foot. The author is saying when we‘re in Venice , we should be on foot which means we should walk around the city, and not ride in the car or bus around the city. Oh I got it.
So why do we say” on foot” using the singular and not “on feet”? Because on one’s feet is a different phrase that has other meanings. We might say the audience was on its feet at the end of the concert so they were standing up. Yes, that’s right! It means they really like the concert or we might say a patient is back on her feet again after she recovers from the illness so she is fully recovered? That’s right! Another common expression is to think on one’s feet. And that means to react quickly in a situation that you are not prepared for.
Well, students, why don’t you get on your feet right now as we take a break. Studio classroom will be right back.
