Linda: Hi Ken, hi everyone.
Kan: Well, I’m glad you’re here because I have a question for you about today’s lesson.
Linda: Ok. Ken. What’s your question?
Kan: Well, in today’s lesson, Justin writes in his blog that he hasn’t had any American home cooking in 3 months. Home cooking, does that mean to cook something in the home?
Linda: It certainly does Ken. If someone makes and cooks a meal in the home for the family or guest, we say it’s home cooking.
Kan: So it is homemade.
Linda: Yes, it is. If something is homemade , it is made or produced in the home by yourself or somebody there. Do you cook?
Kan: No, not really.
Linda: So you don’t eat homemade cookies, do you? You must eat store--bought cookies.
Kan: Yes, that’s what I usually eat unfortunately. So Linda, do you cook?
Linda: I cook for many years, and usually from scratch.
Kan: From scratch? I don’t get it, it makes you itch?
Linda: Well, I’m becoming allergic to cooking, but if you really make something from scratch, it means you make it from the beginning.
Kan: What do you mean from the beginning? Is it all cooking from the beginning?
Linda: Not exactly. If we’re going to make a cake, I can use a cake mix and just add water and eggs to the mix and bake it. But if I am going to make a cake from scratch, I would have to start with the flower, the sugar, the milk, the butter, everything......
Kan: Oh I see.

Hello, friends！Welcome to usage tip. My name is Liz and my name is Oscar. Hi, Oscar. What’s the sentence for today? Today we have a very fun expression to talk about. Aren’t you cute? Does it sound strange to say that somebody isn’t cute in question form? Actually this is a compliment. You could say, you are very cute. However there is another way to give a compliment as we can see in today’s sentence. And the sentence pattern is: be V plus not plus subject plus adjective And by the way this kind of a pattern or expression is often used in spoken English. That’s right Oscar let’s take a look at some other examples. If you want to compliment your friend and tell her how nice she looks today. You could say aren’t you just beautiful today. Or how about this? You are admiring a beautiful view. So you can say : isn’t that view lovely?
