Robinson confident for England’s future
(Rugby News Service) Sunday 21 October 2007
By Jeremy Inson and Clara Iaccarino
From Paris

PARIS, 21 October - His final hurrah in international rugby may not have been quite the fairytale ending he was hoping for, but Englnad full back Jason Robinson is confident that a repeat run to the final is highly likely in the future.

”I think they did extremely well. Mathew Tait, Toby Flood and Dan Hipkiss when he came on gave very good performances. They have come of age in the last seven weeks and the future looks good,” Robinson said of England’s young players.

It is a sentiment that both England captain Phil Vickery and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) elite rugby director Rob Andrew agree with following their unexpected run to the final.

Vickery believes that the state of English rugby isn’t as bad as it was portrayed as being in the wake of their 36-0 defeat to South Africa in the pool stages.

”We have to stop mocking ourselves and saying how crap everything is about England rugby. We are not that bad. Let’s get behind it and drive and get ready for the next world cup,” he said.

Andrew feels that the new faces that England have blooded are just the tip of the iceberg for future development, saying: ”We said we saw in the last 12 months a couple of really good players coming through the game in England, hopefully they will continue to mature.”

An amazing career in two codes

Head coach Brian Ashton, who is still uncertain of his own future, has no such doubts of that of the England production line, adding: ”I know a lot of young players personally and I know there is a massive amount of talent. England rugby has a pretty exciting future.”

Robinson had to leave the field in the second half of the 15-6 loss to South Africa with a shoulder injury, meaning Tait switched from centre to full back to fill the void. In fact such was Tait’s performance as the last line of defence that the Springboks’ technical adviser Eddie Jones believes that he should fill the number 15 jersey on a permanent basis.

Robinson knows first hand that Tait has was it takes, but says it comes down to the player himself as to where he wants to play.

”You would have to ask Mathew what position he wants to play, because there is no point in picking people if they are not comfortable in that position. But he has all the attributes to be a good full back. I have played with him and been skinned by him on a few occassions,” Robinson said.

Even though the RWC 2007 final was lost, Robinson, a try scorer in England’s success in the final four years ago, is able to look back proudly at a fantastic career in both rugby union and league.

”I’ve achieved far more. My intial goal (when I changed codes) was to get in the England team and hopefully do well. I hoped to play in the world cup, but never imagined playing in two world cup finals. I was lucky to win one of them. It’s been an amazing seven years, an amazing 16 years.”

South Africa win world cup

PARIS, 20 October - South Africa defeated England 15-6 in the world cup final at Stade de France on Saturday to add a second Webb Ellis Cup to the one they won as hosts in 1995.

Reigning champions England came into the match on the back of four impressive victories after a poor start to the tournament but were unable to find a way through a disciplined Springboks outfit who were miserly in defence, dominated the line-outs and kicked five penalties.

England fly half Jonny Wilkinson, the hero of their 2003 triumph in Sydney, was unable to turn on the magic this time, missing two drop goal attempts and given little chance to impose himself on the match.

South Africa led England 9-3 at the break after an even first half marked by tactical high kicking and little open play.

Both sides sought to flex their muscle and apply pressure with a series of up-and-unders, though to little avail.

Percy Montgomery opened the scoring with a three-pointer on seven minutes after centre Mathew Tait had slipped and become isolated in the ruck and England were penalised for failing to release.

Wilkinson squared the ledger on 13 minutes after South Africa wing Bryan Habana was called for lying on the tackled player, counterpart Paul Sackey.

Repelled on line

But Montgomery regained the advantage for South Africa three minutes later after team-mate Butch James was adjudged to have been impeded on a kick and chase.

Wilkinson tried a quick riposte but pushed his drop goal attempt wide.

South Africa twice attacked late in the half but were repelled on the line on both occasions.

However, they were awarded a penalty for the second drive and Montgomery kicked truly to push the margin out to six points.

England began the second half in sensational style as Tait cut a swathe through the middle of the South Africa defence with a series of steps and swerves to set Mark Cueto up for a try. But after a long deliberation by the TV match official, the wing was ruled to have been in touch when he crossed over in the corner.

A Wilkinson penalty kick for an infringement earlier in the movement was some consolation, though.

England’s hopes were hit on 48 minutes when full back Jason Robinson, playing his last match before retirement, left the field with a shoulder injury.

Montogmery squeezed home his fourth penalty from as many kicks on 51 minutes to restore his side’s six-point lead (12-6) after England conceded for handling in a ruck.

Francois Steyn took over the kicking duties on 62 minutes when England were penalised for obstruction and the impressive young centre didn’t let his side down, piercing the uprights from 46 metres.

NZ跟AUS都拜拜了

CARDIFF, 7 October – A major tactical change and several well-timed substitutions sparked France`s comeback win over New Zealand.

The French booked a semi-final with England after defeating the All Blacks 20-18 at Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

They appeared to be out of the match, trailing 13-3 at half time, but coach Bernard Laporte rang the changes to wrest the game back.

France captain Raphaël Ibanez said it meant a lot to his players to beat the All Blacks.

&quotIt is a great victory for all the players who gave everything on the field right until the end. We keep a lot of respect for this New Zealand team, they remain exceptional players.

&quotBut in such a great competition as the world cup, courage and spirit make the difference and that`s what happened today,&quot he said.

Change of tactic

In the lead-up to the match New Zealand fly half Dan Carter spoke of kicking with a purpose, making sure each kick went either into space or touch. In the first half the French did just the opposite, kicking aimlessly and inaccurately.

Laporte said his side rectified that problem and it changed the outcome.

&quotIn the first half we didn`t play that well, (our) defence was waning. They were walking all over us. We kicked the ball too aimlessly and had to avoid the mistake of playing every ball.

&quotThe players were patient, they got back to 13-6. The possession was balanced in the second half and we found space and scored tries,&quot he said.

Black day

All Blacks veteran hooker Anton Oliver spoke of the team`s disappointment at another world cup exit.

&quotThe feeling in the sheds was like no man`s land. Sort of desolate, decayed, the smell of – I don`t want to dramatise it – but death, you know. But that is what it feels like, no man`s land, and it is not a nice place to be.&quot

Captain Richie McCaw was at a loss to explain his team`s performance.

&quotWe can`t do anything about it now. It`s going to hurt for a long, long time. I`m lost for words. We believed we could come out and play well. We didn`t play as well as we could have.&quot

England through to the final four

MARSEILLE, 6 October - England defeated Australia 12-10 in the first IRB Rugby World Cup quarter-final at Stade Velodrome, Marseille.

The win came on the back of a dominant forward display, keeping England`s defence of the Webb Ellis Cup alive after a big stumble against South Africa in the pool stage. They will play the winner of New Zealand and France in the first semi-final at the Stade de France on Saturday, 13 October.

Australia scored the only try of the match but it was not enough, with fly half Jonny Wilkinson kicking four penalties.

Trailing 10-6 at the break, but looking the better side for most of the first stanza, England started brightly forcing a turnover to go deep inside Australia`s 22.

A dropped ball from Wycliff Palu at the back of the ensuing scrum presented veteran Mike Catt with a try-scoring opportunity, but he spilt the ball in front of the posts.

With Australia`s pack under immense pressure, Jonny Wilkinson`s third penalty in the 52nd minute reduced the margin to one.

Australia regained their composure by the hour mark after several backline raids, but a poor pass from George Gregan on half way saw England toe the ball through and regain territorial control. Another Wilkinson three-pointer followed and it was England in the lead 12-10, which they clung to despite late pressure from Australia.

After a tentative start by both sides Australia captain Stirling Mortlock got the scoreboard ticking over with a penalty in the seventh minute, giving his side a 3-0 lead after England were penalised for hands in the ruck .

Some good early work by the England pack was undone with some ill discipline at the breakdown before a promising passage of play, breaking the Wallabies line on several occasions and dominating the scrum and rucks. It was rewarded with two unanswered Wilkinson penalties to give the defending champions a 6-3 lead on the half hour.

Starved of possession, Australia`s forwards strung several phases together before wing Lote Tuqiri broke his duck in the tournament scoring out wide in the 33rd minute. Mortlock converted to give Australia a 10-6 advantage.

England beat France to book place in final

PARIS, 13 October -
Jonny Wilkinson performed more world cup heroics at the Stade de France on Saturday night to steer England to a
14-9
victory over France and send them into their second consecutive world cup final.

Wilkinson`s goal-kicking had again been below par, landing only one of five attempts prior to his match-winning contribution.

But he delivered when it mattered most, kicking a penalty on 75 minutes after a dangerous tackle on Jason Robinson, then landing a drop goal on 78 minutes to clinch the victory.

In what had been a tense, closely fought match France looked to have the edge when they led 9-8 with five minutes remaining.

The hosts had led England 6-5 at half time after an even opening 40 minutes dominated by the boot. Both sides battled to assert their authority but neither were able to gain control.

England opened the match in sensational style when wing Josh Lewsey took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to crash over in the corner inside two minutes, though France full back Damien Traille should have been more assertive in attacking the ball to clear the danger.

The England try stung France into action and Lionel Beauxis had reduced the margin to two points when he kicked truly on eight minutes after England were penalised for not staying on their feet in a ruck.

And the fly half booted France ahead 6-5 when he landed another penalty goal on 18 minutes from just inside 50 metres after England were penalised for incorrect binding at the scrum.

Beauxis booted France further ahead four minutes after the restart when England conceded a penalty for coming in at the side of a ruck.

But Wilkinson finally found his kicking boot to cancel that out three minutes later after France were penalised for the same offence.

However, the England fly half missed again on 59 minutes when he wobbled another snapped drop goal attempt with his right boot off an upright back into French possession.

When it mattered most, though, Wilkinson again proved England`s go-to man and he didn`t fail them.

Wilkinson already looking to final

PARIS, 14 October -
Ever the professional, England`s talisman Jonny Wilkinson was already looking ahead to next week`s final in the aftermath of his team`s stunning semi-final victory over France.

Wilkinson said both Argentina and South Africa, who meet in the second-semi-final on Sunday, would pose a massive challenge.

&quotThey are different but both teams have shown top performances,&quot he said. &quotThey have both had a clean sweep and haven`t lost a game and that shows a huge amount of consistency and quality.&quot

Wilkinson was once again England`s hero on Saturday, steering his side to a 14-9 victory over the host nation at Stade de France.

But the fly half had to dig deep to recover his match-winning powers in the second half.

Poor first half

The man whose drop goal in extra time clinched the Webb Ellis Cup in Sydney four years ago had a poor first half with the boot, missing the conversion from wing Josh Lewsey`s early try, a penalty from inside his own half and drop goal that skimmed the post.

But he kicked two second-half penalties and a drop goal to send the defending world champions into a second consecutive world cup final.

&quotAt the start some didn`t go over and I realised I had to give it my all,&quot Wilkinson said. &quotIt got better and they went over in the end.&quot

The French, who had spoken at length about the danger posed by Wilkinson, fought hard in the first half to avoid giving away penalties within Wlikinson`s range.

&quotThe fact that I get as many opportunities as I do is because the guys keep giving them to me. Every kick I miss they get me another one. With a bunch of guys like that you can`t get disheartened,&quot Wilkinson said.

Early offenders

England were the worst offenders in the first half and early in the second, allowing fly half Lionel Beauxis to kick France`s nine points.

Both sides played nervously throughout, contenting themselves with kicking for position and pressuring full backs Jason Robinson and Damien Traille with high, hanging kicks, though neither player was troubled.

Even the introduction of fly half Frédéric Michalak for Beauxis at the 50-minute mark did little to inspire France`s back line.

&quotThe legs were a bit heavy but we can`t look for excuses against an England side playing the percentages without playing anything great,&quot said scrum half Jean-Baptiste Elissalde.

Line-out bosses

In the line-out, England had the edge, stealing four of their throws, to two by France.

However, it wasn`t until Sébastien Chabal replaced injured second row Fabien Pelous that England began to stamp their authority on that phase of the match and stop the hosts from building momentum.

&quotWe weren`t too worried about them winning the ball, (we were) just trying to disrupt it when they had possession. In their line-outs they have a good driving game. That`s where we wanted to shut it down,&quot said second row Simon Shaw.

For the second week in a row substitutions proved decisive for both teams.

England`s Joe Worsley, who had come on for Lewis Moody, saved a certain try with a tap-tackle on wing Vincent Clerc in the dying minutes, while Dimitri Szarzewski, who gave away the crucial penalty, had taken over from captain Raphaël Ibanez on 50 minutes.

Impact from bench

England captain Phil Vickery was full of praise for the England substitutes.

&quotLast week the bench had a huge impact on the game and it was the same again today. You have to back them to come on and make a difference. Joe, as we all know, is a world-class player. Peter Richards, Toby Flood and Dan Hipkiss all came on and made a difference.&quot

For France`s outgoing trio Ibanez, Fabien Pelous and Pieter de Villiers, the dream of world cup glory is over.

&quotIt`s difficult to find the words to express my disappointment and the disappointment of all the team,&quot Ibanez said. &quotWe thought we would have this kind of match, it was difficult to the very end. It`s a huge disappointment for all of us.&quot
