On the concept class ‘Transference and countertransference’, the lecture mentioned the relation between transference and synchronicity. I felt confused about the relation between these two concepts. But in the reading material for this week, in the article ‘Projective identification’ (N. Field, 1991), the author wrote something about transference and four-dimension, and this article really excites me. So I try to construct the relation of these two terms from the concepts that the article provided:
As part of transference, projective identification, which Freud termed ‘thought transference’, is an ‘unconscious communication’, an unconscious interplay between patient and the analyst. But how can two people communicate without pass through conscious? According to Money-Kyrle’s model, at unconscious level, everyone is already merged, no transfer is required. Nathan Schwartz-Salant stated that in this kind of merged state, the interactions take place in the area of a shared unconscious, or the four-dimensional space, or what Jung called, psychoid, where ’is a primitive state in which an instinct and its psychic representation, namely the archetype, are not yet differentiated...the archetype has not reached the level where it appears as a mental image, but instead it may manifest in paranormal and synchronous events, spontaneous bodily sensations, and even affect material objects’(Jung 18, in N. Field1991: 96 ).
So, to sum up, projective identification, as part of, or one kind of transference, takes place where synchronicity also occurs.
