It''s a new day; it''s a new start.

Recently my supervisor J. got promoted. She now is an assistant professor at the Biochemistry Institute of University ZH. According to our original plan, I would be staying in the old Microbiology Institute with Professor D at ETHZ, her former boss and my dissertation mentor. Since it only takes a 20 min bus ride to go from one institute to the other, so it wouldn’t be a problem for J. to supervise me, even when I’m not working in her lab. Unfortunately, or to her better fortune, she now got bigger labs at Uni as planned and needs people to fill them. Well, as one of her two PhD students, I HAVE to be in her labs. Although Uni ZH has a much longer history than ETHZ and the Biochemistry Institute is much bigger than the Microbiology, plus frankly speaking, my project is more biochemistry-orientated than microbiology, so it’s good to move to this new institute, technically. But I’m still not 100%ly happy about the whole thing. After all, I’ve been at ETHZ for 6 years now; it’s bit tough to say goodbye. Besides, being a national institution, ETHZ has resources that most institutes in the world can only dream of. Not that now I have to save every penny in this new institute, but I have to start to be more economical about ordering chemicals or lab materials. And the myth about more cute guys and girls at the Uni than ETHZ, not true, so not true. That’s probably a rumor spread around to attract more students to Uni. (ETHZ is generally a more favorable choice for students due to its enormous resources.) Of course, there are also upsides about this new institute. The general atmosphere at Uni seems to be more relax, not as uptight as in ETHZ. The campus is much nicer and greener; the climate in the lab is much cooler (my lab in Microbiology is like a sauna) and the view from my desk widow is fantastic, blue sky, mountains in the distance and the city. From my old lab all I can see is the emergency entrance of the hospital across the street. Anyway, che sara, sara. A change might do me some good, who knows?

Strangely I have this feeling of leaving a sugar daddy to move in with a cute, but not well-off lover.
